Cost is NOT A FACTOR
Between 2 scchools and confsued where to go. Umass is def more far for me compared to umd, but umass does have the major I want. Im fine with info sceince at umd unless computer engineering is possible to transfer to . But the main factors I care about are internships, research, quality of academics, jobs, the basic stuff. What would you guys reccomend based on ur expiernece.
Easy - UMASS.
Why would you ever attend a school where you can’t major in what you want - even if it was possible to transfer? You can reach out to UMD and ask but these are limited enrollment programs. Why be under the stress?
Guess what - there’s many colleges where one can be happy - not just one. And some go to their “dream” school - and have bad profs, roomies, or more and are miserable.
Internships - you have to hustle and get, schools don’t just give. And you’ll be on equal footing at these schools or most any other. All schools have research - just ask.
To me, this isn’t even close. They are peer schools but not peer for you given at one you can study what you want and the other, you cannot - at least with certainty.
Bonus for UMASS - the best college food in the country.
I don’t see this as a hard decision at all.
Good luck.

yeah i understand oppturnties are pretty similar, but for comp e transfer its not that hard to get compared to cs. It feels wrong to pass an opptunrity from a school close to me, as well as t20 for major. but again i understand ur logic im just feeling pressure ig
You said Computer Engineering.
Do you want CS or CE? I should have asked - are both affordable? You specifically noted cost is not a factor.
You know rank doesn’t matter. Sure, it’s great to go to the hometown school - but they didn’t give you what you want.
You don’t have an opportunity close to you - and UMASS is outstanding in CS or CE. But if you told me it was WVU vs. UMD or Penn State vs. UMD, I’d say the same thing.
Go to a college where you can study what you want. Life is long - why would you take the chance of not being able to to do what you want to do? The careers of the two majors will likely be very different.
Well, if you already have your answer, why ask the question?
Who is pressuring you and what’s the logic of the pressure? I hope not cost because you said cost isn’t a factor.
Personally, even if all were equal, I’d pick the one that - and these are subjective but also validated in niche -
- Has the nicer campus
- Has nicer dorms
- Has the top rated food in America!! Food is very important - trust me. Both my kids had low blood sugar due to saying food stinks. I have a colleague in Phoenix who claims the food at UMASS is better than any local restaurant in Phoenix.
If you’d made your decision, go to UMD.
But you asked for a recommendation based on info you provided - and personally, I don’t see this as a tough call.
im saying that ce is easy to transfer to based on what I heard after first sem, i made this thread to get some clarification on that, but CS is very difficult as a comparision. I want to do ce. both are affordable. ANd yeah i understand that i should be able to do what I want, but if I just need to sacrfice a semester but get better oppturnties, I would do that. But again maybe my assumption about the transfer process is wrong which is why I made this thread. Also the pressure is mostly myself like if I regret missing oppturnties I could have gotten.

Please don’t use abbreviations here, and check your spelling also.
From what you have written, UMass seems like the choice I would vote for.
They are both limited enrollment programs.
What have you heard? You need to talk to an advisor - but a lot of the info is on line - including classes you have to take.
Why do you think UMD would have better opportunities?
UMD states that in 2025, 24% of students were still seeking jobs at graduation. UMD doesn’t show a knowledge rate (what % they know about) and UMASS just has stats for the university and CS - but they are much better.
You’re making an assumption that UMD is superior. I would not make that assumption. I would say that you will determine which is better based on your hustle.
My kid turned down Purdue (and UMD) for Alabama in engineering - and works with kids from Michigan, Purdue, Washington, and more. He hustled.
I would state both schools are equal but you will determine which is better.
But in your case, UMASS is a much safer path. Personally, I wouldn’t spend my money on UMD if you were my kid - not given your known desire.
Good luck whatever you decide.
