UMD Lingo

<p>On another thread, someone pointed out that the Art-Sociology building is unofficially called on campus Art-Soc (pronounced art-sosh).</p>

<p>Of the following, are there others that incoming freshman can be a step ahead (and save themselves a freshman moment) by knowing? Any other terms or lingo that you wish you knew before you went to UMD??</p>

<p>I do know that the Dorms are known by their name; people don’t say “Hall” after the building when you say where you live. The student union is just “Stamp”. </p>

<p>Well I’ve got some time, so ones that I’ve had to use…</p>

<p>SSU* Adele H. Stamp Student Union Building= Stamp</p>

<p>ASY* Art-Sociology Building= Art-Soc (Sosh. I believe I was the one to inadvertantly use the abbrieviation in another thread, but I wasn’t the one to clarify the pronunciation)
BPS* Biology-Psychology Building= Bio-Psych
BRB* Biosciences Research Building= Usually BRB or Bio Reasearch
BRD* Byrd Stadium Building (Upper Deck)
BRD* Byrd Stadium Complex
BRD* Byrd Stadium Concession
BRD* Byrd Stadium Ticket Booth=all of theses are usually either Byrd Stadium or football stadium…nothing groundbreaking here.
CCC* Cambridge Community Center=No one tends to go here for anything but the North Campus Snack Shop (not sure on the actual name) with is always the incon.
CRC* Campus Recreation Center=CRC, occasionally Eppley
CHM* Chemistry Building=Chem, again these aren’t groundbreaking.
PAC* Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center= CSPAC, pronounced See-spack
COL* Cole Student Activities Building=Cole, or Cole Field House, or Field House
CSI* Computer Science Instructional Center
CSS* Computer and Space Sciences Building
ELL* Ellicot Hall= No shortening, but it’s pronounced “Elli-kit or ellicut” with the stress on the first half, not “elliCOT”
KEY* Francis Scott Key Hall=Key, or Francis Scott Key, I’ve heard it both ways.
HJP* H.J. Patterson Hall=HJP, never Patterson, there is another patterson
KEB* Jeong H. Kim Engineering Building=Kim, Kim Engineering, Engineering
MCK* McKeldin Library=McKeldin
PKT* Preinkert Field House-Did not know there was another field house…
ARM* Reckord Armory=Armory
RIT* Ritchie Coliseum= “Wait, I have to cross route 1? Forget it…” (Not really)
SYM* Symons Hall=pronounced Simmons btw.
TWS* Tawes Fine Arts Building=Tawes
TUR* Turner Hall (Dairy/Visitor Center)=Dairy, honestly almost skipped this one because I’d never heard of Turner</p>

<p>Also, north campus dining hall is always The Diner.
South Campus convience store is the Commons Shop
Stamp Convience store is the Union Shop
McKeldin Mall is the mall</p>

<p>And that’s all I’ve got for now. I’m sure there’s more. Most things are never said with the ‘Building, Hall or Lab’ at the end of it.</p>

<p>In addition to what ginab591 said, other things I’d note:</p>

<p>ASY* –> Like the OPs have said, it’s generally pronounced “art-sosh.”</p>

<p>CCC* –> If you’re in Scholars, you’ll be in the CCC for class. They also hold some meetings for various organizations and groups there. Otherwise, you’ll go to the incon… those rare times it’s actually open when you need something. It’s named the “incon” due to the ridiculous hours (the official name is the “North Campus Snack 'n Shop”)… it closes at 7pm on Friday and doesn’t open again until 5pm Sunday. </p>

<p>CRC* –> I’ve pretty much heard this exclusively referred to as the “ERC” (Eppley Recreation Center), sometimes just “Eppley.”</p>

<p>CSS* Computer and Space Sciences Building –> Generally just referred to as “CSS”. The full name is a mouthful.</p>

<p>PKT* Preinkert Field House –> It’s small, near(ish) to the South Campus Dining Hall. Undergrads generally (as far as I’m aware) have classes or anything at all there, and most people don’t even know where/what it is.</p>

<p>RIT* Ritchie Coliseum –> Ritchie. Most of the people who go here to work out either live in one of the Greek houses or on South Campus.</p>

<p>HBK* Hornbake Library –> Like McKeldin, you just say “Hornbake.” (Also, like APM said, the residential halls are just referred to by name, i.e. “Centreville,” not “Centreville Hall”; same goes for most of the academic buildings, i.e. “Jimenez,” not “Jimenez Hall.”)</p>

<p>MMH* Marie Mount Hall –> Just called “Marie Mount,” pronounced like “Mary Mount.”</p>

<p>EGR* Martin Hall –> I’ve heard this referred to as “Engineering.” (Kim, the other main Engineering building, is further away from this area of campus). It’s next to the Math building.</p>

<p>NCC* Nyumburu Cultural Center –> Just called Nyumburu.</p>

<p>You’re right about the ERC. It had just been too long since I heard it and my brain went “CRC sounds like what I’m used to hearing. I’ll go with that.”</p>
