UMD short essays

so UMD has 3 short essays, a, b, c, and the second one asks you something and then says “If No, please focus on questions a and c.” just to make sure, does this mean only write on topics a and c and avoid b?

That is pretty ambiguous. What is the exact language of the section and the questions?

Without that information though, I’d guess that you should answer a, b, and c, but concentrate more on a & c. However, I might be wrong, so the exact language would be useful

Write about your academic interests and the personal or academic experiences that have led to or nurtured those interests. What did you enjoy learning about in high school either through your classes, extra curricular, leisure activities or your involvements in the community? If you have any career aspirations at this point, explain how your interests match these aspirations.

Does multi-disciplinary team research with a faculty mentor, lasting throughout your undergraduate years and dealing with the social implications of science and technology appeal to you? If yes, briefly tell us why and what are some of the interests, experiences and skills that you would bring to such a research team. If No, please focus on questions a and c.

Which of the following would you prefer and why. The opportunity to take a wide range of courses across a range of disciplines including the sciences, social sciences, and humanities, or the opportunity to focus on courses in one discipline that deeply interests you?

those questions go in order a, b, c

It does not mean to avoid b. It means if your answer is “No” to essay B, just focus on essay a and c. So if you answered “no” for essay b, you don’t have to write anything. At least thats the way I see it

sorry when i said avoid, i just meant not answer

Perhaps an answer of “No because of X” might be appropriate for B.
