I’m currently a sophomore in high school and have an interest in economics. I would love to live in the DC area and would like to know which college (Georgetown/ Maryland-College Park) offers the more prestigious economics major. I’m confident that I would get accepted into both, so that isn’t a concern, but what would the financial aid situations look like? Also, which of the two would provide better internship opportunities ?
You are a sophomore so 1) you should not start deciding on specific colleges yet and 2) you should not assume you will get into Gtown which has a 16% acceptance rate.
@gavin0899 No you do not need to be religious to attend Gtown. I know many students of many faiths who attended and loved the school. Still, it should be recognized that it is a Jesuit college so a student who attends should be respectful of that and also will likely will have a core curriculum that includes some philosophy and theology courses (but they likely don’t have to be Catholic based). I think Gtownn is about half Catholic and the president is not a priest.
@gavin0899 You really need to understand that no one can be confident about getting into Georgetown. At least half the people who apply have the test scores and the grades, but they will be rejected anyway. You’re probably a very nice person in real life, but right now you’re coming across as arrogant, and if that’s how you come across in a college essay, your chances at Georgetown will be very slim.
As for financial aid, if you’re OOS for UMD, you can’t expect any. So unless you can afford $250k for an undergraduate education, it’s not a viable option. American U and George Washington U are two other great schools in DC, though I don’t know about their economics majors, and if you’re interested in going into consulting or another job that generally requires a very prestigious school, they won’t quite do it. Their need-based FA is limited, but if you have Georgetown stats, you could get some good merit aid.
Agreed, at the very selective schools there are more people with amazing grades and standardized test scores than there are spots so unless you last name is Obama or Kennedy or something along those lines then you are not a shoe-in for admission.
