UMich SMTD Decisions Class of '28

Has anyone heard back from SMTD regarding an admissions decision? Was told in my PAT interview on Jan 12th “not to worry” and admissions would take “about a month to process everything”. Wondering if decisions are rolling by major or released all at once - if rolling, when to expect one back?

We haven’t heard anything but my D just had her audition Feb. 1.

DD doesn’t audition until this Friday

My son auditioned for PAT 1/19 and they told him he’d hear by end of February/Early March
Good Luck!!

My son auditioned on 1/26. At their admissions meeting, they said by 3/1 if I’m remembering correctly, then scholarship info by 4/1… I think, lol! Terrible memory for all the different info at all the schools.

I looked up messages from last year. My son received SMTD acceptance around 2/20. I don’t know if it’s rolling as each studio makes their decisions, very likely though.

Good luck!

Also curious. Seems to be earlier for some, but also a little random. They didn’t tell us when. I know the official says March 1st… I think

We were just there this past weekend and were told that decisions would come out on March 15th, with merit/financial awards determined by the first of April. I know that some SOMs release decisions based on studios and some do it all at once. I was thinking UMich releases all at once, but idk for sure.

What instrument were you there for? Was there any information on how scholarships work? I know they come out later but we have no idea how much money might even be available to a studio.

I believe SMTD scholarship works differently for different studios. My son has friends in two different instrument studios across 3 years and their numbers (what they claim) are all over the board, from original offer of several thousands to final offer of 40K. If you ask the current students you’ll get a better idea. Some studio might have recruited several top students in the past couple of years and may run out of funds; while some studio might have missed several top candidates and have the potential of spending more this year. As a school in whole there must be an annual cap for scholarship. How it’s distributed among studios (I believe) would vary year to year.

I do think scholarships here can vary widely. I thought I read that a bass player got full tuition one year possibly here? My kid did a large regional auditioned orchestra program so we hear about students on the audition rounds every year in various instruments/vocal so we may have heard that through local connections.

But the year my kid auditioned they had little to none for undergrad vocal. And that might depend on what holes they have to fill in their program year to year and what their grad line up looks like, etc. That was our highest offer. He really clicked with a teacher there with a lot of back and forth communication who was apologetic and gave a little background and encouraged a return for grad school.

Anyway, if admissions or money doesn’t work out, there may be stuff going on behind the scenes trying to balance numbers and budgets and it may have nothing to do with your kid’s audition. My kid only got contact after the fact likely because of a prior visit and sample lesson and back and forth emailing.

Got an email from SMTD for a financial aid webinar of which a recording was sent - quite helpful with a bunch of good details specific to the school. If you’ve applied, it’s likely been sent on the same email address (got this Jan 18th).

Percussion. And to all: in talking with a few music students at UMich, many appealed their initial merit and were able to secure more money. In some cases, bringing costs below in-state. As others have mentioned, it depends on many factors as to how much money might be available to your studio any given year.

So happy @Linda_Anne for the UMich acceptance! @crabbydaddy we are also anxiously awaiting UMich results. I know we were told March 15 last weekend, but hoping that things move way earlier than expected. Would be a great gift!

Any Jazz people news yet? No news here.

None of my jazz acquaintances have reported yet, so I don’t think so.

My son just heard from the professor that he was accepted and will get official acceptance from admissions tomorrow. He was told to complete FAFSA and CSS so that we can get the best financial package possible. We probably won’t receive it until mid-March. We are so excited to hear that he got in. Hoping for a good scholarship!!
