UMich vs UIUC vs Others for BME

That’s a great summary! Is there any issues with safety with the campus being somewhat close to a big city (I’m from Kansas so I’m not too familiar with Urban areas)?

What do you think are the best and worst things about michigan academics-wise? I also have been following Michigan basketball, it’s crazy how Michigan even after winning the big ten tourney is a lower seed than Wisconsin :).

It’s an urban campus, but so are a lot of other great colleges. Boston University and NYU are urban. You learn to navigate being in an urban place. Things like not walking around alone late at night. You won’t be the only student from a more rural area at CWRU.

My own kids grew up in a rural area and both attended very urban colleges. They loved the experience, and the change!

During orientation, I would be surprised if campus safety and how to deal with it was not addressed. It is just about everywhere.

You will develop some “street sense”, and that is a good life skill to have.

I’m tagging @ChoatieMom who can give you lots of wonderful info about University of Michigan.

Changing majors is easy, but for CS in either college. D18 graduated from LSA, not CoE, but she always seemed to get her classes, though maybe not always at optimal times. And besides “Psych 101” type classes, as an example, most classes were on the smaller side.

She had at least two advisors, one for each department, but I suppose the negative was that the appointments were usually from a couple of days to a week or two out depending on the time of year.

The other really nice thing about our Michigan experience was that with her AP credits and pre-orientation tests, she could have graduated in 3 years. She did graduate in 3 1/2 years with two minors. The certainly saved us some money.

While Michigan beat Purdue 86-68 in the B1G tournament, plus splitting the regular season games, Purdue got a 4 seed and Michigan a 5 seed? The online Michigan blogs are filled with “We were robbed” posts. The B1G Champion is a 5 seed?

However, basketball, hockey, etc. are just diversions between football seasons.

Oh, the biggest highlight from my kid’s 4 years in A2 was roaming the field after beating Ohio State 42-27 for the 1st win in the current win streak of 4 in a row.

Having waxed on about Michigan, I’ll bet you get at least one more acceptance between now and Ivy Day. :+1:

DH and I met at U-M in the late 70’s so nothing relevant to add that hasn’t already been said. Ann Arbor is the best college town in the country with well-earned sports loyalties bordering on fanaticism, but the OP has said that athletics aren’t on their radar and continues to focus on prestige/rankings/ROI despite the counter wisdom provided in so many posts here, so I won’t continue beating that dead horse.

I will say that we may never forgive our son for passing on Michigan, though. He earned his BS (EE/robotics concentration) elsewhere and is finishing up his CS master’s at GT. He will be applying to PhD programs (CS/E or AI research) later this year but not Michigan. Where did we go wrong?

ETA: I dropped out of beauty school to go to Michigan with a full-ride scholarship (tuition, room/board, books, stipend). I guess it’s more expensive and harder to get in these days.

GO BLUE!

Couple more updates: got into UCIrvine and UCSB, don’t know if they are options I should consider at this point?

I’m sorry for being lazy, but so that I don’t have to reread the entire thread, are you from CA?

To answer your question @sushiritto

The committee has shown that they typically don’t allow major conference championship games to affect seeding much, if at all… unless, of course, the team that wins it would not have otherwise been in the Tournament (extremely rare). So prior to that game, in which Wisconsin’s top scorer had an uncharacteristically bad shooting performance, it’s very likely that Wisconsin had already locked up a 3 and Michigan a 5.

Oh that’s right. My bad, I forgot. Thank you!

I would only consider UCSB, if you really like the beach A LOT and surfing, where surfing is a club sport.

Otherwise, wait for Ivy Day.

ETA: UCSB has had housing issues in the past, so that would need to be checked into further, if UCSB is a top choice. @tamagotchi any news on that?

I am not an expert on UCSB, sorry!

@lkg4answers Any updates on UCSB housing?

deleted.

I’m not sure if this is the most appropriate place to discuss this because it sounds like OP is OOS and not considering UCI or UCSB.

UCSB housing “issues” aren’t worse than UCSC or Berkeley. Isla Vista is adjacent to campus and is a great college town. It is beachy and bohemian and has a great social scene. Rent in Isla Vista is high. If a student wants to live on the beach (Del Playa) or adjacent blocks (Sabado Tarde & Trigo), they are going to pay even more.

I got into boston university today but probably won’t consider it cause its extremely expensive. I also got waitlisted at UCLA I might consider staying on the WL depending on the rest of my results (unlikely I get into anywhere else).

If BU is expensive why would you consider UCLA or Michigan ?

It goes back to what is your budget ?

These are all high 70s plus with UM thousands higher the last two years.

You’ve already gotten into much less expensive schools that provide near identical outcomes.

Congrats on the acceptance.

BU costs 94k a year which is a bit too high for the value that you recieve.

How do you define value ?

Clearly Purdue wins there since it provides identical outcomes to the rest.

But you are hung up on name that it will open more doors even though published outcomes counter that - annd even at lower ranked schools in biomedical engineering.

So how are you defining value ?

You’ve got great acceptances. You did well.

But think about what’s truly important and then research to ensure that your final choice meets that hypothesis.

Well done thus far.
