If your DS participates in the BFA program, how realistic is it to pursue a second degree within the UMN system? What sort of AP credits or summer effort would you need to make this possible if the second degree was within the CLA network?
@ferraradonna It’s possible, but won’t work with all CLA majors. My BFA kid entered hoping to possibly double-major in linguistics, but due to scheduling conflicts with the required BFA courses, it didn’t work out. They instead chose to pursue an American Studies double-major. The thing that makes it really tough is CLA has a foreign language requirement and you can’t get automatic AP credit; you have to test out and then they grant the AP credit retroactively. And if you don’t manage to test out, the schedule for foreign language is really tough in that most of those courses are four days a week, so you’ve got to find a morning class. It definitely helps that they entered with AP credits that covered four required core classes and the Freshman writing requirement. They also took one summer course after Freshman year and are considering one this summer, though I think that’s related more to ensuring they get to take a course they really want to take more than not having time to fulfill the double-major requirements. On the plus side, UMN still offers a lot of virtual classes, so that helps with some scheduling conflicts. Also, be aware the BA can’t be within the Theater & Dance Department. Feel free to DM me. If you have a particular subject in mind, I can do a quick look at schedule builder to see if it seems feasible.
@CHO2023 Makes sense, and I will DM. Appreciate this.
