unbearably cold or slightly chilly

how cold actually is evanston/chicago area

im from arizona and for me cold is one of the deciding factors believe it or not. is northwestern bearable or would someone like me not be able to put up with it.

for someone like you, i bet it might be fairly cold in winter. i’m from alaska, so nothing is cold to me anymore.

I’m from Hawaii, and I’m surviving!

It depends what you consider cold. Yes winter is very cold in Chicago. Northwestern is directly on the lake so there’s a very chilly breeze thats always present. If you to were ask me if it’s cold I’d say yes, some days it’s freezing, but unbearable no. One thing about living in Chicago is lasting through the very cold in the winter and the hot humid days in summer. But it’s only REALLY cold a few weeks a year. The rest of the winter is cold, but not unbearable, definitely not something to hold you back from Northwestern. You could put up with it for a few months.

It’s 46 Today!

It was -30 Wind Chill Saturday!

Seriously, you’re not going to die. It’s just cold.

Yeah, I moved to Minnesota from Florida and the cold here doesn’t bother me. You will get used to it, and it’s cool to see the leaves change colors and actually have different seasons.

I’ve lived in the Chicagoland area my entire life, and truthfully its not that bad. There places where winter is worse and places where summer is worse. I think the thing that is most distinctive about Chi-town weather is how fickle it is. In January it was in the 40’s for a while and then all of the sudden we were in near record low temperatures. As long as you have a hat, mittens, and a toasty coat, you’ll be just fine. Besides, Chicago is gorgeous in the winter time! If you’ve never been to Chicago, make sure you come in December. There are Christmas lights on all of the trees, skating in Millenium Park, and of course the classic window displays at Marshall Fields and Carsons. I suppose the moral of this story is, don’t let weather deter you from going to Northwestern.

thanks guys
i guess for me the worst part is waking up cuz when its so comfortable under the sheets its just hard

but i read that the dorms are almost overheated so i guess it cant be that bad

the only thing that freaked me out was when someone said that 40 is on the warm side…i think our coldest was mid 50s

for winter, 40 is warm - it was neg thirty wind chill on Sat. THAT was cold.

It is all in what you personally are used to and what your body can handle. When I went to school in Detroit (I’m from California) back in the day, it was definitely the wind chill that was the killer for me, along with rain and snow at the same time.

I didn’t know how to walk around campus or climb stairs that were covered with ice and water, and was constantly falling to the laughter of others around me.

www.weather.com states that:

Chicago is currently 30 degrees but feels like 24, and will only reach 39 degrees today.

Phoenix is currently 46 and feels like 44, but will be a toasty 77 degrees today.

The Monday hi/lo forecast for:

Chicago is 30/17 … OUCH !!!
Phoenix is 85/56 … sounds more like heaven!

I certainly know where I’d rather be…

“i guess for me the worst part is waking up cuz when its so comfortable under the sheets its just hard”

It’s not going to be cold in your dorm room. It’s cold outside, and if you have a warm coat, hat, and gloves, you’ll be perfectly fine.

so im guessing im gonna hafta skip my daily morning jog in winters?

A lot of people still go jogging. Most days, anyway.

i went to chicago this past january and it was like 20 degrees, which wasnt horrible, but the wind just cut right through you.

haha, it’s called the Hawk, and definitely separates the men from the boys…

No you wouldn’t have to skip your daily morning jog. Tons of people run in the winter unless there’s a ton of snow on the ground. And if it’s too cold you can go running in one of the workout centers on campus. It was in the 30’s today and I could comfortably walk around in a sweatshirt. But last week it dropped below 0 and you needed a jacket. But it’s nothing unbearable. It rarely gets to be extremely cold. The rest of the time its cold, but not unbearable.

haha, “unbearable” and “extremely” are subjective words. For an old fuddie-duddie like me from yuppie California, 30 degrees is COLD !!!

I find I handle cold very differently when I’m somewhere where it’s “supposed” to be cold - here at NU, and somewhere where it’s supposed to be warm - home (Hawaii). 60 degrees there is COLD, but 60 degrees here is balmy.
