According to their website, they will either be accepted, denied or waitlisted. No deferrals to regular decision (which I’m actually good with - need to know if he should move on).
Good luck to all students/parents. There’s a general uptick in terms of chancing as the decision date nears. There’s no definitive way to determine the exact mix of stats that allows for an acceptance. You can look at UNCs common data info to see what’s emphasized. You can also expect high competitive areas in state are more competitive in relation to same stats within rural areas. Test optional is simply one less metric, thus an application needs the other sections to be of high standard. Legacy is considered. OOS is even more difficult to determine with the stats of students being very high . ECs are quantified as is the other sections and due to a bit of subjectiveness they can be difficult to overcome a lower gpa/score. Essays too, but can help indicate any anomaly that may need addressed. In the end it’s a fantastic school but an accept/ deny doesn’t define a students ability or life trajectory.
Yeah it’s better to move on in these cases, less stress for the student and the parents
And I read waitlist is just a soft deny because they take so few kids off the WL.
We know of two students in the past two years who were admitted off waitlist EARLY - meaning, end of April. In one case, the student had already mentally ruled out UNC and he decided not to go even though original it had been his first choice.
Interestingly, last year they did the same, but indeed took some waitlisted kids and accepted them during RD (in state). So htey didn’t say deferred, but also accepted in RD.
Historically, UNC has released the last Friday of the month at 4 pm. They release the same day as NC State, but an hour earlier. It will be interesting to see if this year they release 1/31 or a week earlier, but I anticipate it will be a Friday. This allows families the weekend to cool off before pestering admissions about decisions, and it allows students the weekend to process before going to school to hear about their friends’ acceptances. (That said, our high school let’s out at 4:15 pm, so it was a tragic mess of hysterical students the past two years when they stupidly opened decisions at school.)
. . . and this year NC State decisions come out January 30!
Although I’ve also read that NCS typically releases the Friday before the listed deadline, so if that’s the case this year, it will come out January 24 and if UNC tracks NCS, it will also release January 24.
Oooh, if that’s the case, I am betting on January 24th for both UNC and NC State.
From what I’ve read, they have had “January 31” as the release date but often release before then. Also, as noted above, UNC tends to release when NCS releases, and NCS states on its website that decisions come out January 30, which means it could come out the Friday before. Just hoping both come out on the 24th but we’ll soon find out.
Didn’t know these nuances. Thank you.
Not necessarily. They have announced earlier than the published date for years, typically the last Friday in January. But this year the 31st is the last Friday in January, so it’s hard to say. But they have also always released an hour before NC State, and NC State has Jan 30th published (and also has historically released the last Friday in Jan), so one theory is both will release Jan 24th (a Friday).
I literally have no idea what I’m talking about, just hoping here!
Curious about what OOS applicants think about UNC vs UGA these days. I’m aware of the USNWR rankings. Thinking about realistic pros and cons
My daughter was OOS. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
We’re OOS. My S25 had UNC as his first choice, wouldn’t consider UGA. It has nothing to do with the programs of the schools, but rather the states they are located in. He’s comfortable in NC, does not want to be in GA. I think because (fairly or not) the states are perceived so differently, you will see a decent number of people comparing them based on geography and not necessarily strength of program.
I love your table. You are my kind of person! And you uncovered that it’s not consistently a Friday!
Tables are my favorite!
It’s not consistently a Friday, but it WAS the 24th one year. Let’s hope!
I came up with that same scenario yesterday when digging into this. If they release the same day as NC State and State is listed as the 30th, then there’s a good chance the 24th will be the day (assuming it’s a Friday release).
