Carolina is probably my son’s top choice, but we’re out of state, so we’re considering it an extreme reach and he’s trying to not get his heart set on it (and he’s focusing his hopes more on his second choice school, which is more attainable).

GPA: 4.0 (unweighted)
ACT: 35
Major: Geography
EC’s: Eagle Scout, four year varsity indoor and outdoor track, NHS and some other odds and ends

D25 - OOS, 3.95 UW GPA, 12 APs, 33 ACT, NHS and club/varsity athlete.

Trying to decide on major selections. They specifically state that it doesn’t matter for admission but it is strange that they give three choices in the common app.

It I remember right, it is so they can consider you for direct admission to certain schools so you don’t have to apply to your major once you get there.

I think everyone must apply to the Arts and Sciences first. Then, apply to other majors. Every student apparently has to do the IDEAs for the 1st 2 years. It’s like a gen ed curriculum, I guess.

That’s true although they do have direct admit programs. Not many people get them but they exist. It’s called assured admission Special Opportunities - Undergraduate Admissions

So for anyone else who has already submitted, have your kids gotten an email to set up their portal? He can see that Carolina downloaded the common app info on August 26th, but still no communication back from them about setting up the portal. He can see on the Common App dashboard under Carolina it says something like “expect to be contacted by mid-September about setting up a portal” and I guess technically it isn’t mid-September yet, so maybe it’s normal? It just feels weird. He’s sent in applications to six schools and all the others got back to him within a few days.

My D25 just clicked the submit button to UNC in the Common App. We are very excited. We are OOS/International. We know how difficult this will be. Good luck everyone!

Maybe they mean if all three majors you pick are in the same college then it does not matter.
I am guessing they admit by college?

No. Only a small amount of students get assured enrollment into one of a few programs. Everyone else applies/declares a major in the 2nd year.

They claim the three choices you put down don’t matter. This may be true. Daughter is a freshman there this year and there are something like 3000+ biology majors (intended) out of about 5000 kids. Those kids had a scheduling nightmare as they couldn’t get classes they needed.

Good luck to all - this was us a year ago and now she’s a Tarheel!

My D25 submitted her app to UNC EA on Sept 30. But her counselor and teachers haven’t submitted their LORs yet. They said they will do it this week or next. Is there a cause for concern? Will the admissions be already reviewing the application without the LORs? EA for UNC is Oct 15. A bit worried.

No, the materials deadline is not till 12/1. And even if it took longer than that, they would likely still accept it.

No concern. Teachers/counselors have a different timeline.

UNC is my dream school but im worried about how I rank up compared to the seniors because i have had an entire year less of school to build up my gpa. UNC usually accepts around 25 kids from my school which is why I am worried.

I am in state my the way

Curious what happens in the time between application deadline and materials deadline.
Maybe they read the essays?

Or start on completed applications. Many are in well before the deadline.

I turned in my application about 25 minutes before the deadline. I live in Raleigh, so it’s probably a lot more competitive. I wrote my personal essay on my activism for black girls’ advocacy in hospitals and in society for the betterment of their health and my passion for the human heart and how I plan to tie the two in my future career because of my hope for black girls. But a lot of people are telling me that I should’ve written about my emotional trauma instead. Am I cooked?
