Not sure if she will accept but it’s looking unlikely. She is already psychologically committed to USC. She has until May 31 to decide but will likely decide sooner. She was notified by email to check her portal where she saw confetti and the letter on the screen.
Congratulations on all the acceptances and totally understand the psychological commitment!
Were these all regular admission or global launch acceptances?
Has anybody gotten an update for either sophomore or junior transfers in-state. I heard that they are calculating their yields on 5/30/2024 and people that get accepted in the first wave hear back on June 7th.
Are those dates for transfer students only? or for all waitlisted students?
Did anyone get off the waitlist today? I saw in a couple places (including this thread) that June 7th was a day to see waitlisted responses come through. I personally didn’t get any response today. Also on reddit today, someone confirmed by talking to UNC that they have no more transfer spots open for waitlistees but they still have room for waitlisted first years ![]()
Nothing. My daughter still on waitlist.
Any news?
Haven’t heard anything back yet. don’t quote me on this but, i have a good feeling that they might come out june 21st (next friday). i’ve seen some reddit posts from class of 2027 waitlistees who said they got their decision back on June 23rd, 2023 , which was the 2nd-to-last friday in june. for 2024, that would be june 21st. if not the 21st, then it HAS to be the following week… most likely a friday. from what i’ve seen online, only oos students have gotten off of the waitlist so far (not entirely sure about this but it’s just from what i’ve seen) so i hope that the 21st is the day!
Wait list results are out - my daughter got guaranteed acceptance 2025. We are in-state, legacy.
Hey my son received final rejection today 6/17 @ 4p. He has no idea bc he stopped following his school high school email a while ago BUT his crazy mother still gets notifications when emails arrive, shh. He is fully committed to WFU and couldn’t be happier. That new email is keeping him very busy getting ready for the fall semester.
I am also following this (rather dead) thread and others where he is wl’d because I’m just curious about the process since I have 2 daughters who will be going through it over the next few years. ![]()
Honestly, he had no interest in attending UNC for many reasons. But, most importantly, he is planning on majoring in Engineering so Chapel Hill isn’t a good fit. In case you don’t know, UNC ONLY offers biomedical engineering in a combined program with NC state. You have to go to NC state if you want to major in any other type of engineering. I also wonder if UNC noticed that S24 never attended the numerous UNC events held at our school? Nor did we ask our CC to push for us.
NTL, I was bored last Sunday and decided to check his portals for any updates since it seems other schools have portal indicators or hints. So when I looked at UNC’s WL details, I realized that it said you need to send them your final transcript as soon as it’s available (FYI if you still on WL). Again, they may have noticed our lack of initiative since others from our HS surely sent those in much earlier but I figured better late than never. I just wanted to see what would happen when they saw his stellar final grades or maybe I just wanted them to see what they are missing out on! But apparently A+’s in BC calc and AP (ECnM) physics, A’s in AP Econ and AP Latin and the rest of his courses wasn’t enough to sway UNC?!?! Or rather, more likely the case, UNC knows it isn’t good enough for my son!!
S24 had been UNC Waitlisted since ED was released.
He did submit final transcripts early June - with his final grades pulling him up 0.15 W and placing him solidly in Summa latin honors.
He received an email about updated status of his application last week (6/18) - with a ‘sorry we don’t have space to take you at this time’ - but with an offer of “Guaranteed Admission” as a Sophomore Transfer if he accepts the proposition by mid-August, checks off the minimum standards required, and submits the Transfer Application by Mid - February. You are not bound to accept the offer for guaranteed admission even if you fill out the transfer application in the spring.
It’s a legit offer - as a close friend of ours had one daughter in at UNC and the second daughter (2 years behind) was waitlisted then received this offer over the summer last year. She enrolled at NCState as a first year, and met the checklist, completed the Transfer request and has now accepted their offer to start at Chapel Hill this fall.
S24 is set to start OOS this fall but has accepted the ‘spot’ on guaranteed admission transfer list. So now he has to perform, which he has to regardless in order for us to keep financing OOS, and make application.
We will see how things progress- as UNC was his first choice school to begin with, but was understandably unhappy to be placed on the waitlist - and has already become very motivated / inspired with his current commitment. However, I believe the entire application process has taught him a very valuable lesson - don’t place all your hopes in one path, keep all reasonable and acceptable options open as much as you can so I am optimistic he will revisit this offer in his head frequently during the fall semester.
Good Luck to those still waiting.
Definitely a legit offer and many in the more competitive districts in NC seem to get this. We know a valedictorian (1 of 50) in CH who got this a few years ago, and two who got it this year and plan to do it.
FWIW, kid is at UNC this year and said 3500 of the freshman are bio or chem majors (most pre-med). Lots of those kids had trouble getting pre-req STEM classes in registration, and I can’t imagine all will make it through. I don’t know if it matters what one puts as an area of interest, but my social sciences kid had a much easier time getting classes.
I’ve come across maybe a dozen or so kids (or their parents relaying) about the guaranteed transfer / sophomore admissions offers - extending back at least 6+ years now. Thus far each one has some legacy tie to it - including Graduate/Prof school legacies, which is our Son’s tie.
His current school (Purdue - very STEM focused) misjudged their yield and reportedly had around 1,600 MORE students accept than anticipated. This equates to around 18-19% more Freshman than planned. This obviously affected housing (for returning students as well as incoming first years - the school actually attempted to rescind/renegotiate returning students dorm housing to try to get them to live off campus… it wasn’t received very well), dining halls, rec center capacity and definitely course scheduling. The campus is building new housing (Dorms and private residential buildings) but they are 1-3 years away from completion -and- these were planned based on the prior projected campus growth, which this years numbers obviously exceed. So it’s been quite crowded, his description “everything is chaotic”, on campus this fall.
He’s in a STEM-driven major (Quant-Heavy) and he says he’s fortunate that when their required online orientation courses opened up right after HS graduation he completed them in the first couple days which then allowed him to schedule the counselor appointment immediately. He’s living in an all male dorm with the large majority being FYE, CS and other STEM driven majors - most of his dorm mates who did not get with their counselors until mid to late summer reported there was a lot of jockeying around to fit in their major general required courses.
At this point, I believe he’s still leaning on the UNC guaranteed admission for next fall, though he is really enjoying Purdue thus far. We are trying to figure out how to hedge on housing options (UNC and Purdue) for next fall - as they’re already being prompted to sign up for options next year. (My Daughter at Texas received her ‘first option for next years housing application’ the week she started classes this year - crazy.
I have a freshman at UNC. We’ve heard about 60% of current students get housing for sophomore year. Transfer it will be difficult. That said, Granville would be an option and it is essentially a private dorm near the frat houses and Target, barely off campus. (It’s actually closer to my kid’s classes than on campus dorms.)
