UNC Global Opportunities

Son applying to UNC Business for fall ‘25 - does selecting ‘yes’ for Global Gap year, Summer Study abroad, and / or Carolina Spring Forward increase chance of acceptance?

I have no insight beyond what the school says about Carolina’s Global Guarantee…from the common app:

Your selections won’t affect your admission to the University in any way and there is no limit to the number of programs you can express interest in in this section. If we are able to offer you one of these opportunities, it will appear in MyCarolina at the same time as your admissions decision.

Please note that your son would technically be applying to be a pre-business major at UNC. Kenan-Flagler is not direct admit, and has a secondary admission process. If your S is sure he wants to be a business major, he should have schools on his list that are direct admit, as well as a Plan B should he attend UNC and not be admitted to KF. Good luck.

Yes. I know they say it won’t affect it, but kids who aren’t on campus first semester (Carolina Spring Forward) take the place of someone who doesn’t return after first semester, so it’s going to increase chances.

Are you in state? Stats?

Hi, thank you for the input!!
Out of state.
25th percentile English SAT, 50th percentile math. 4.0 weighted, fairly rigorous course load. Decent extracurriculars.

If they want UNC, I would definitely check those boxes. OOS UNC acceptance rate was likely around 5% last year after they saw 17,000 more applicants than the previous year.

Hi! You actually can check a box in the Common App to apply for assured enrollment into the business major at UNC (just wanted to clarify for any onlookers).

True, but KF direct admits are a very small group and reserved for tippy top applicants…it’s the ‘least commonly traveled path to the business major’ per UNC.

Undergraduate Assured Enrollment Special Opportunity

UNC Kenan-Flagler selects a small group of high-achieving prospective students for assured admission to the undergraduate business major. The Assured Enrollment Program (also commonly referred to as Assured Admission to Business) is one of a few assured enrollment Special Opportunities offered to a small percentage of incoming students.

Special Opportunities nominees are selected for the Assured Enrollment Program through a comprehensive evaluation of their UNC Undergraduate Admissions application. You do not need to provide a supplemental application for the Assured Enrollment Program. Students are chosen based on the following criteria:

  • Exemplary high school academic record
  • Significant extracurricular involvement
  • Demonstrated leadership

If you’re selected for the Assured Enrollment Program you are not required to declare Business on your general application to UNC. Should your academic interests change, there is no obligation to pursue a business degree.

For Assured Enrollment consideration:

  • Apply by the Early Action deadline.
  • Select Assured Enrollment to UNC Kenan-Flagler as an interest area within the Special Opportunities question of the UNC application.
  • Only applicants nominated for Special Opportunities (roughly top 9-10% of admitted students) and meeting the criteria listed above will receive a supplemental review for Assured Enrollment consideration. There are no supplemental requirements for consideration.

If you are granted Assured Enrollment, you will need to meet the program requirements described below along with submitting a streamlined version of the normal application after your first year at UNC.

Program Requirements

In order to maintain assured enrollment status, students must:

  1. Maintain a 3.25 GPA in the first year at UNC.
  2. Make steady progress through the business pre-requisites.
  3. Complete two first-year seminar type business classes (BUSI 188 and BUSI 189).
  4. Submit an abridged, non-evaluative version of the application indicating your wishes to pursue the business major or minor after their first year.

While an incredible opportunity, it is important to note that Assured Enrollment is the least commonly traveled path to the business major. Please see additional FAQs listed at the bottom of the page or follow the link below to access additional information or to schedule a virtual or campus visit.
