Any advice or thoughts appreciated. OOS applicant. I understand the competition for those slots is intense. My background is sort of complex.

First I attend a large (Sr.class 550) public high school… academically competitive and challenging… top 75+ grads seek admission to selective or higher colleges… By graduation I will have taken 9 AP courses.(1 soph/ 4 junior / 4 senior) My ACT is 31 with a 35 in Science. My gpa is a bit week… unweighted around 3.5 … Varsity Athlete in 2 sports all 4 years, summer employment, active in my church, community etc…Come from a (white) lower income family…and here is the complex matter … I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 13… as a result of health problems I have missed about 20 days per school year while in high school. (this makes it tough to keep up with 4 AP courses + the extracurricular)…my state/school system considers me “disabled” for ADA purposes.

I have done my best to maintain a “normal” high school experience, life with girl friends, extra-curriculars etc… but realize my gpa is on the weak side…I’m not lazy, its just tough when health problems force you to miss 20 days a year… Is it possible at a school the size of NC for Admissions people to consider these factors, or is it like most large state schools where it is all about the numbers ? I know that smaller private schools spend more time personally reviewing applications and special circumstances, but wonder about a school the size of UNC ?

Any thoughts on what my chances will be for admission at UNC ? Thanks.
