UNC vs. UVA science major

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between UVA and UNC-CH. I’m interested in majoring in something biology-related. I know that UVA has an excellent human biology major that really interests me, and UVA has a stronger science program in general than UNC, but something about UNC appeals to me more than UVA. If I go to UNC and major in biology, will I be as prepared for medical school as I would be if I went to UVA?

We have a very popular and very good bio program here at UNC, so if the intangibles are telling you to come here, then I’d recommend it. The two schools are very similar, particularly in academic quality, so the little cultural things are what make the difference in where you should go.

Yes. You will be. Between these two schools, with med school in mind I suggest you disregard academics, and pick based on as gattican said the intangibles. Which ever one YOU like better, not anyone elses opinion. And visit both schools.

UVA is usually more well known for some of the more liberal arts departments whereas UNC is widely known to have very strong science programs especially in Biology.

There will be no difference in med school preparation between the two schools, as gattican and wolfpack both said, pick the school for the other intangibles and DO visit both schools while classes are in session to get a true feel for both places. The biggest difference socially between the two is that UVA has a far stronger Greek scene and the importance of Greek affiliation for social activities as well as the influence on social activities by the Greeks is much more heavily emphasized at UVA.

Our bio department is great but extremely difficult from what I’ve heard from my pre-med friends. If you’re interested in public health, we also have one of the top schools for that.

Its a toss up, if you are really interested in UVA’s human biology program, then go there. UNC and UVA are both great schools. It just comes down to the one you would do best at and which one is suitable for your interests.
