Uncertainty about trip dates - should I book? Trip insurance?

I would like to go away to Italy for two weeks in September. I would be booking my flight through Priceline or a similar site, to save money.

Here’s my dilemma. The prices seem to be pretty low right now, with Bing saying that there is a really big chance they will start going up. I work in a law firm, and one of the cases I am working on may be postponed to September, in which case I won’t be able to go. I won’t know what’s going to happen until late May.

I can wait to find out, but I am afraid that in May prices will go way up.

So, I am wondering if there is any trip insurance out there that will cover this situation (I just need the tickets covered - I can waut to book everything else). Also, I will be going with a friend. Is there anything that would cover my friend in case I cancel? The friend doesn’t have any work obligations.

Yes, there are policies that allow you to “Cancel for Work Reasons” or “Cancel for Any Reason”. You have to read the details in each policy as these may have an additional cost, need to be purchased within a certain number of days after you book, and may not provide a 100% refund. There are sites like insuremytrip.com that provide quotes for several providers that you can compare.

I also saw something on United for an international ticket that was an extra fee that allowed you to change the ticket. It was something like $379 for a $1200 ticket. Look at United.
