Last year we used the flat, rectangular plastic storage containers on wheels widely available at Walmart/Bed Bath & Beyond. For some reason, they didn’t really work that well for my son. They provided a good bit of storage, but the mechanics of pulling them out and shuffling for the right one, between the legs of the bed and what not, didn’t work for him.

Those storage containers are everywhere so my guess is that they are the popular choice. I’m looking for any other suggestions.

Thanks.

We didn’t even bother with any underbed storage when DD went to college. Her older brother totally forgot he HAD things in his underbed bins and when he needed something…he bought it. So much for his extra socks, shampoo, school supplies, etc.

I would suggest getting nothing…and just taking what will fit in the storage IN the dorm room…and replenishing as needed during the year.

That was the problem my son had - out of site out of mind. He couldn’t be bothered to go through the motions necessary to pull the bins out. Unfortunately, that’s about the best and only storage space he has.

My son had a shelf in his closet. It had his toiletry items (shampoo, toothpaste, soap, laundry soap). He did NOT use a “shower caddy”…that went in the trash. He had ONE of each thing on the shelf and never looked elsewhere…so the second year…that’s all he took with him.

Re: other “storage”…DS had two drawers in a shared dresser (those rooms were SMALL) and a large desk drawer. And he had his closet. He put everything he needed in those spaces.

If your son never looks under the bed…it won’t matter what “vessel” you put there…he still won’t look under his bed. Spend the money on the replenishment of items when he needs them.

Just my opinion. I think kids take WAY too much “stuff” (and particularly “extra stuff”) to dorm rooms. Just take what he needs and forget about the rest.

D got a storage rack thingy for under the bed at the container store –
[The Container Store > Platinum elfa Mesh Closet Drawers](http://www.containerstore.com/shop/elfa?productId=10014860&N=3+1000039)
This isn’t it exactly but you get the idea. So the frame stays put, but the mesh drawers pull open. I’ll let you know how it works after I move her in.

If he has the room, my son took one of these to college last year and it worked great. The drawers are very deep. He was able to fit his into his armoire-like closet in his room.

My son’s bed can be lifted 2ft. We got two of ^these^ to put underneath to use as a dresser. If the bed wasn’t lifted and he had to go hunting for things I don’t know how well it would work having things underneath. Out of sight, out of mind would be his mindset.
