Underfilled majors

Are there any majors which Georgetown has a hard time filling due to lack of student interest?

the basketweaving major has been surprisingly unpopular

o really?! I thought it would be more appealing than the unfunny joke major…any current students have any first hand experience on this topic?

Advice: Don’t look for the easy way to gain admission, finding the least popular majors and applying to them will not help and will almost certainly hurt you. Admissions officers look at an applicant holistically and want to see that the applicant is truly interested in the field of study through courses they’ve taken, EC’s that show their interest and an essay that truly is genuine. They are pretty good at their job.

Therefore looking at the least popular/filled majors really isn’t what you should be focusing, but rather look at what field of study or major does your application, your whole package lend nicely to. Your always going to do better focusing on your strengths rather than your perceived weaknesses of the school.

The way one of our Admissions Officers described it basically like this (paraphrasing): We do look at what tentative major you’ve selected, so for certain majors, it definitely does pique our interest. So with Classics, for instance, we don’t have that many Classicists, so if that’s something you’ve indicated that you’re interested in, we’ll take notice. At the same time, by selecting that, we’re going to scrutinize your application for evidence that you’re actually interested in Classics. So marking a less-popular major won’t confer any kind of advantage unless you have the background that proves your interest to that subject.

I should also clarify that there’s really no such thing as “filling” a major. The classes are offered regardless, there’s no quotas or cutoffs for majors in a particular field. If you’re looking for a listing of some of the ones with fewer people in them, the ones that come to mind right away would be:

Theater and American Musical Culture (they’re both brand-new)
Physics, Math, Chemistry, and Computer Science
Classics
Medieval Studies
Art History
Portuguese
Comparative Literature
International History

This isn’t to say that those programs aren’t strong - I know the Classics and IHIST programs are quite good, for instance. There just tends to be less interest in them, for various reasons.
