Undergrad business: Pepperdine, Loyola, or Chapman?

Hey guys,

so I need a few safety business schools for my college list. I already have George Washington and Syracuse down, but I need like 1 more…

Which is more nationally regarded: pepperdine, loyola or chapman? I would think Loyola… I’m more concerned about prestige for undergrad.

Thanks!

Don’t worry about my stats, these schools are 100% safety schools for me. Only problem is for pepperdine and loyola… I’m not christian.

P.S.- I’ve had this one concern stuck in my head. I’m really afraid of going to a top school because of all these 2200, 2300+ SATers going there… Like right now I’m at a 2050+ (don’t want to be exact on here, for “confidentiality” purposes), but I’m afraid the 2200+ers would ruin the curves for me and stuff.

Any words of hope?

Thanks!!

oh btw does anyone else know of some good safety schools that are nationally regarded and have good recruiting from huge finance/corporate firms?

only 2 views… -.-

200 views and no responses?

Stop bump up the post every hour. Take some time and wait for people to answer your question.

Why do you need to worry if it is a religiously affiliated school?

Pepperdine appears to have lower chance of admission. This school has the best ranking among the three schools (#55 - National [US News]).

Which Loyola are you talking about, New Orleans, Maryland, or Chicago(I heard that only New Orleans and Maryland are real Loyola, Chicago is a knockoff?)?
Here’s some stats from US News:
Chicago: #116 (National)
New Orleans: #8 (Regional - South)
Maryland: #3 (Regional - North)
and admission rate is around 55% for all Loyola schools.

I never heard of Chapman.

It appears that Pepperdine is the best school among the three schools, and Loyola is the worst school. However, I recommend Loyola because it is a smaller school(except Chicago) than the other two.

Basically all accredited schools have firms to recruit employees in different fields. For instance, Louisiana Tech in Ruston (by Shreveport), Louisiana, attracts many employers from different cities to recruit employees. Louisiana Tech is a good (not like Tulane or SMU) school, but not really well-known outside Louisiana.

I am trying to point out that this should not a part of your concern, especially your school choices have many people study in Business.

Thanks for the reply. I meant Loyola Marymount btw near Los ANgeles

Hi Swaginator,
Chapman University, LMU, and Pepperdine are all excellent schools located in SoCal. Obviously PowerY doesn’t know very much about California schools. If anyone who is willing to research Regional- South and Regional-North schools, but too lazy to research Regional-West schools, he or she shouldn’t be giving advice. Chapman and LMU are among top-ranked universities in the Regional-West. In terms of general over-all ranking: LMU#4 and Chapman#7. If you want to get informed properly about these schools and their programs, I would suggest you to go directly to the schools forums or research their web pages online. Here’s an example of the Chapman’s Argyros School of Business and Economics National Ranking:

Hope this helps.

None of the three schools are nationally regarded, but then again, very few schools are. There are only a few schools everyone in the nation has some idea about, and those are Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT, any school with the state in its name (ex: University of Oregon), and the service academies (not Coast Guard or Merchant Marine). Beyond that, almost all schools are regional in recognition. In California, the most all around prestigious schools are Stanford, UCLA, UC Berkeley, and Cal Tech.

Remember, a safety is not only a school you can get into, but also one you are SURE you can afford. Are you positive that you can afford LMU, Chapman, and Pepperdine?

Just so you know, Pepperdine is much more religious and isolated than either Chapman or LMU. None of the schools you listed are more prestigious than the others in terms of their undergrad business programs.

“Only problem is for pepperdine and loyola… I’m not christian.”

This should not be an issue at Loyola Marymount. It’s not an overtly religious student community. Jesuit schools tend to be very open-minded and accepting about different points of view. It IS an issue at Pepperdine. They are all about creating a Christian community there.

Miami University (Ohio)
Trinity University (Accounting program)

Btw, Out of the three schools, you’ll be more likely to receive a better merit-aid from Chapman. I’m a long time residence of SoCal and I can tell you that Chapman is a gem of a school situated in Orange County. They’re also well-known for giving great merit-aids and grants. The best way to find out whether you can afford a school is by using the school’s Net Cost Calculator. [Net Cost Calculator | Chapman University](Chapman University (redirect))

To find out whether a school is the right fit for you, go visit the campus and classrooms. Talk to their professors and students. Where do you want to live and work after graduation? Keep in mind Orange County has powered the Southern California economy in the past two decades with the greatest job growth, highest median home values and lowest unemployment rates. This is great news for the Regional schools such as Chapman because businesses generally can cut costs by finding candidates in their region and local area. Good luck in your search!

typo error: I meant resident.

Thanks so much. Should i not put Jewish in my common app then? But that’s a problem cuz it shows my parents are of middle eastern decent and they will think I’m muslim (not saying that’s a bad thing). but it’s either I’m muslim or jewish, so I think I should just actually write what I am?

“Should i not put Jewish in my common app then?”

This isn’t an admissions issue. It is a fit issue. These are expensive private schools where the residential community component is a big part of the product. I’m sure that there are individual exceptions, but I am not sure I would want to be a Jewish (or Muslim or Hindu) undergrad at Pepperdine. You would have to be extremely comfortable being on the outside of the mainstream and living immersed in a different religious culture. “Each semester, all undergraduates are required to attend 14 programs in the Convocation Series, which are activities aimed at building Christian faith, affirming Christian values, or addressing ethical and moral issues within a Christian worldview posed by current events.” Is that appealing to you?

aww hell naw… i’ll just apply to loyola then.

thanks for the info

Swaginator, just so you know, Chapman is extremely Jewish friendly. It’s been mentioned multiple times on the thread about Jewish B students as a very welcoming place. One girl from my temple youth group goes there and loves it.

Darn, I wasn’t applying there or anything, but Pepperdine looks awesome… Not hard to get into, pretty good with aid, gorgeous campus right on the beach… But I had no idea they make you take a religion course each semester! For that reason, I’d never apply… I feel trapped (I sit there and nod my head and hold my breath) when people around me get into discussions about religion (saying everything’ll be alright because they have Jesus), god only knows how awful that class would be for me to sit through…

I think of all 3 schools as being pretty equal for business undergrad. Pepperdine may have a slight edge because Graziadio School of Business is respected almost as much as Anderson, Marshall, Paul Merage, etc. I never really hear of anyone who went to Chapman and LMU for business school. But again, that’s all MBA stuff.

Fyi - Chapman has a very strong Business program and it’s one of their most popular majors.

The five most popular majors for Chapman’s 2010 graduates:
Business Administration and Management, General 19%
Cinematography and Film/Video Production 12%
Public Relations/Image Management 7%
Psychology, General 6%
Speech Communication and Rhetoric 6%
