Hi all. DS is interested in comp sci, and is in state & legacy for Chapel Hill. Good stats (4.0 UW/4.5+W, ACT 35, solid ECs, 10 APs). Makes sense to apply to CH and he’d be there with his sister, BUT, what is up with their application to computer science? Is it correct that he would have to be accepted at CH and start attending, not knowing whether he will be able to major in CS?
I’ve read the articles & website, but I still don’t completely understand. Also wondering if anyone has the inside scoop on whether CH will have this policy long-term, or is perhaps trying to build up their offerings to accommodate more students? And, what are the criteria for acceptance to CS?
This is the case at many schools although this doesn’t seem onerous. Many schools don’t have direct admission. If that’s a concern, choose one that does.
"The demand for concentrating in a computer science program has grown significantly at UNC–Chapel Hill over the past decade. In order to maintain the quality of educational experiences Carolina students studying computer science deserve, we must restrict the number of students majoring in computer science relative to our faculty size’s ability to sustain the programs.
Those wishing to concentrate in computer science must be admitted to a major program (B.A. or B.S.). Students are eligible to apply in the spring semester after completing or while currently enrolled in COMP 210. Students who are admitted to the program continue through the introductory course sequence with COMP 301 and COMP 211 and will have access to upper division electives to complete their degree programs. Please see the department’s website for the most up-to-date information about the admission to the major process"
I would try to get some admission statistics or criteria. Is it like the business school and holistic? Or are you guaranteed admission if you have above a certain GPA cut off?
