Does it really matter where you do your undergraduate Computer Sci. studying? Are there big differences between universities or are the differences mainly at the graduate level?

bumpity bump

All the state schools are very good in computer science.

Maybe this question would be better answered by giving us a list of the schools you are comparing.

mainly I was wondering about the UCs for undergraduate computer science. I hear the curriculum is pretty standardized – especially amongst UCs. just wondering how true that is.

thanks,
Dmission

The curriculum is pretty standardized everywhere, but there are still differences between the UCs. Top companies tend to recruit at the higher UCs like Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD.

Would there be a big difference between those three you mentioned and say UCD or UCI?

There was actually a post about this in Slashdot a few days ago. Might want to look for that. Couldn’t hurt!

Can’t seem to find it? Approx. how long ago?

ilovebagels…where can i see this post slashdot…

bump bump bump

one last bump

Big difference between Comp. Sci at UCLA and Comp Sci at UCD ?

If you want to be a programmer, talent is 10x more important than where you went to school, in my experience. If you are talented, you will quickly rise to the top and be paid accordingly.

I think UCLA Comp Science is better thought of as UCD Comp Science.

Do employers even look at undergrad. or would they focus more where you went to grad. school?

For engineers, some don’t need graduate school to go directly to work so your terminal degree is important. If you stop at undergraduate UCLA is a better choice. But if you plan to go to graduate school, a BS from UCD or UCI and a Master or a Phd from UCLA, MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford, then your undergraduate degree is not as of important.

If a company is interviewing to undergrads, one is B.S. from UCLA and one is B.S. from UCSB, will they automatically go with the UCLA?
