What year in HS is she? Has she started looking into colleges?

Graduating this year from high school.

Ok…so I assume she has chosen her college? Or narrowed it down (for those schools with later dates due to Fafsa)?

Has she chosen a college?

My D is a junior chem major. She has had research and TA positions at her school. That is the best resource for your student. She should contact professors at her school and inquire about opportunities, both during the school year and over the summer, if that is of interest.

I’m not sure what you are asking about high school…would you please clarify?

She hasn’t done any internships and I was wondering she might inclined to do some summer internships this year in the areas of her interest.

I agree- not sure what you are asking about HS.

My daughter had a minor in chemistry. She did research on campus and had a summer position off campus. She was also a SI for one of her classes. I would contact the professors at the school and ask about opportunities.

Your D is going to college at the end of the summer. Honestly…I would spend this summer relaxing, working to earn a little spending money, spending time with family and friends, getting ready for college, etc.

If she really wants to do something related to her major, that’s fine, but it is not necessary…at all. She will be busy enough in a few short months.

I agree with twogirls.

Besides which it is quite late to look for an internship for this summer. If your D is really interested in doing that, do you have a local college or university she could contact on the off chance a professor is willing to work with a high school student?

Does your D believe she needs research before starting college in the fall? If so, that is not the case at all. I encourage her to spend her summer doing things she loves and perhaps a part time job.

ETA: cross-post with twogirls’ edit.

One doesn’t need to gussy about the career resume before college starts.

What is her goal - teaching, industry, medicine, etc. if she has one.

A parent is lucky if a kid had a job before college - like a grocery store or Dairy Queen - and it’s hard to get an internship even after first year.

All said, when she gets to school, let her get comfortable and established - and then from there, she can look into available research opportunities either through postings (they send out emails) or simply asking a professor.

No need to rush the student - let them be a kid for now.

I hope you let this student enjoy their last summer home before starting college. There is absolutely no need to do an internship this summer or really anything else related to their college major.

A regular summer job would be an excellent choice.
