Undergrad Major

I’m currently a freshman @ SJU, queens, studying finance. I’m looking to transfer, but I don’t think I have the grades (for the schools I want to attend) for Finance.

My question is: In the long run, will it be detrimental to be majoring in something like individualized study or Economics if I want to pursue a career in Finance at a top firm?

Financial companies love people who have a quant major (math, physics, statistics, computer science, engineering). However going to St. Johns will not help your chances into a top firm. I would start networking since it’s not what you know but who you know…

Well that’s exactly why I want to transfer–I know St. John’s isn’t prestigious and I want to go to a top tier, but Finance @ top tier doesn’t look like it’s going to happen despite my 3.9 w 43 creds given my relatively poor high school record (3.0), so I’m thinking about transferring but into a less competitive major.

I’m thinking individualized study bc I can just take finance/econ/quant courses and wrap it in one, all at a top tier.

ive always been told math major, econ minor is the ticket. i wouldnt study finance now since thats more than likely going to be your MBA concentration.
