Undergraduate Engineering(Computer) @ McGill

I was just wondering how good McGill undergrad engg. department is…

Are the professors top notch?
Do undergrad students have research opportunities?
Internships?
Grad school placement?
Electives et all?
Possibility of double-majoring?
etc.

Thanks.

profs…do a ratemyprofessor search on mcfee( ecse200 ) and ferrie( esce221 ), you’ll experience them both in second year, or first if your as adventurous as I am, and you may contemplate killing yourself. By the way im sure each are do exhilerating research, so in that sense their “top notch”, its just their classes that’ll get you.

internships…you wont get one if you dont look for one, there are plenty of job fairs etc, the CAPS system is fairly good, and if you look on your own it wouldn’t be a prob.

grad school placement…your not at any sort of disadvantage

electives…there are mandatory, social science and engineering a society electives(3 or 4), and after that you can take whatever you want. Just know that you’ll be delaying your gradutation because the core curriculum is quite dense, you could always take courses in the summer etc if you so please.

double majoring…it would take a long timee, more than your willing to devote to undergrad, i assume. You best bet it is to double major in comp sci as there are like 3 overlapping courses, but even then…minors are a much more reasonable option

overall…its a good department, but there are so many factors outside of class that make being a part of this department/uni alot better.

…which are… ?

Also, do the classes get better after the first couple of years?

the people and the city, both are pretty great i think.

I dont really know if it gets better after first couple of years, I assume it does because those two courses are considered weeding courses, where like 30-40% fail.

That’s not an issue. All I want from McGill from a solely student point of view is good professors in my 3rd and 4th years, and good internship opportunities. Basically, a top notch education after 4 years. :)

yeah okay you’ll get a top notch education if you come here for sure. the university experience( outside class, doing nothing and meeting ppl ) is priceless though, luckily mcgill has both, just my two cents…
