I see people writing about grants and awards they won as undergrads. How do you find out about these? I am talking about those that are specific to a major, like WilliamC wrote about funding (research grants) and awards he got for Pompeii. Also, over the summer, I was doing some work for a teacher and a lot of the info I needed was located in archives on the other coast. A grad student said to me, “You need a travel grant.” I didn’t pursue it because it wasn’t a huge part of the book and I was running out of time, but I don’t even know where I would have turned to get such a thing. But adcoms like to see these things, right?
Thanks

I work with some professors with their research and often times they mention some grants/scholarships offered by the department as well as national/government ones (e.g. NSF, DARPA). Sometimes, large corporations offer them in your field of study (microsoft, nvidia, intel for CS/CSE/ENGR).

On a side-note, adcoms are usually faculty professors at the department. Knowing that you can save them money makes their decision easier ;)

Ah yes. See, there is the rub. My “college that changes lives” has no departments, so I have no idea how to obtain this information. Very frustrating.

Some of those awards and stuff are by nomination only, too. My advisor gave me a fellowship to apply for from Intel two days before it was due (including three recommendations). Needless to say I wasn’t considered for it last year, but I’m going to pester him about it this year around then time when it’s supposed to be released to see if I can get a shot at it this year.
