I am currently a Sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh, pursuing a BA in Theatre Arts. For personal reasons I am taking the rest of this semester off, and when I return I would like to think about either transferring or completely starting over at a different school. While I like Pitt overall, I chose it simply because it was easy and close to home. The theatre program is unfortunately quite poor, and I feel like I’m getting very little out of this experience. I love to write and direct, and have been thinking about finding a school that has tracks for one or both of these subjects at an undergraduate level.

Here’s my general info, because I’m not quite sure how this whole transfer/start anew thing works:

I’m 19 (young for my year, I skipped a grade in high school). I started out last year with fairly good grades, but due to personal issues (the same reason I’m taking some time off) my grades began to slip. I hold a 3.25 GPA right now, which keeps me in the Honors program but is much lower than what I would like to have at this point. I’ve taken Playwriting 1 (they offer only Playwriting 1 and 2 at Pitt) and received an A+. I also co-directed a lab show earlier this semester (usually not available to Sophomore’s - only Juniors and Seniors), and have started putting together a portfolio.

So with all that said, what are some decent schools with undergraduate directing and or playwriting programs? I’m interested in playwriting first and foremost, though I would like to be able to direct as well. I’m not sure at this point whether I should be in a conservatory or LAC setting. I’m also not sure whether I should transfer or start over…

Suggestions?
