I’m doing undergraduate research right now in the thermoelectric properties of silicon nanowires. I was wondering, is this topic extremely important for graduate school?

For example, I like the topic, however I’m also intrigued by other nanoscale devices and properties. And being a junior, I might some other fields I’m interested in. So will graduate schools expect me to continue this research or something extremely related or will they be more interested in the fact I did research?

Most definitely that you did research and you know what you did. People switch fields and subfields ALL the time. I think variety in your background in relation to your ultimate research goals is always a benefit and never a downside. You are not at all expected to continue research in this. My first research experience, which I really really liked and still think is great, is not at all what I want to do in grad school.
