Underperforming AP classes

My school’s AP chem class is only in its second year, but to date only 2 of 15 students have actually passed the test. Most had 1s, there were a couple 2s, a 3, and a 5 (me). I consider myself pretty smart, but not really that much (if at all) more intelligent than some of my friends who have taken the class. Our AP chem teacher is overqualified - probably one of the most intelligent teachers in the district - and is able to explain things very well. Some of the other AP classes at our school have 80%+ pass rates, so I don’t really understand why chem is such an anomaly.

Is anyone else in a similar situation? If so, why do you think this happens? I’ve told some of my classmates about how on CC people talk about how in some of their classes almost everyone gets a 5, but they don’t even believe me. I guess it sort of seems unfair.

That is a bit strange…AP Chem should have plenty of students pass the AP. Although your teacher is really smart (which I don’t doubt), is it possible that he/she is not covering the course outlines listed on collegeboard? Or has not been doing questions AP style or describing how to write FRQs? Based on what you say, seems like your school is good. So my guess is that the AP Chem course was only taught 2 years and your teacher is not teaching “AP style”. Not that he/she is a bad teacher; just not teaching “to the AP”??
