Underrated and overrated college towns

Philadelphia is overrated when speaking of a college town.

Agreed, Philthy has a pretty bad reputation from the people I’ve talked to, but IMO it’s fully deserved. Plus, their sports fans give the city a horrible image (at least the ones in the DC area)

^^ Like the Washington fans are so nice! Actually, while it is no secret that I am not a big fan of Philadelphia (I grew up in the suburbs), my college son likes it quite a bit. He has found the business community to be very vibrant and the social/club scene very fun.

For the last time, cities with over one million people in them are NOT college “towns.” I don’t care how many students go there.

^^DC fans are MUCH more friendly than philly fans. Of course both cities will have their drunken idiots, but of all the redskins/caps games I’ve been to, by far the worst fans I have seen have been when the eagles or flyers were in town.

blacksburg… jmu… is that town really good??? because all i hear are complaints

east coast can be cool… what about charleston (cofc)… that town is really cool…

personally i really hate dc

I think in the greater Pittsburgh area there’s over a million people, but Oakland (the area the University of Pittsburgh) is located in certainly feels like a college town.

Athens is overrated

Half of you list Baltimore, Philly, and other large cities as “college towns”. They are not college towns.

IMO a college town is a place where you hear the name of a town and the first thing you think of is…now here comes a shocker…A COLLEGE!

baltimore is dangerous

Boston has a population of under 600,000. It has 27 colleges and universities, not including those in Cambridge and other surrounding communities ( i.e. BC, Bentley, Tufts, etc ) The student population makes up a significant number…although it is a city, I definately would consider it a college town.

Not me lje62. When I think of Boston, the first thing that comes to my mind is not any college. Cambridge on the other hand, now that is a college town.

I’m sorry, I live about 20 minutes out of Boston and it’s no college town. Sure, it’s a great place to go to college. But a college town? Absolutely not. When I think of Boston, I don’t think of BC, BU, Tufts, etc. I think of the Red Sox and crazy drivers. College towns, to me, are towns that are really just devoted to and cater to the college. I was in Bloomington, IN this weekend, and THAT was the definition of a college town. Everywhere took the IU cards en lieu of cash, IU apparel everywhere, etc. That’s not how it is in Boston. Cambridge, on the other hand, could definitely be a college town.

Boston is not a college town. I live in Cambridge, MA all my life.

Cambridge, MA is a collegetown. Boston is merely a city that just happens to have a multitude of colleges in it. It’s a great place to go to college, but it is far from what I think of what college town is like… like Ann Arbor with UMichigan…

It’s like the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Over 30% of the city is employed by the Mayo clinic and Rochester, MN is called “Med City” for a reason. The main economy in Rochester is the Mayo Clinic health care system… Main economic engine in Cambridge is Harvard/MIT…and UMichigan in Ann Arbor… Duke in Durham… University of Maryland College Park in College Park… Amherst college in Amherst…

Overrated: Eugene, OR

LOL I love that. I hate Philly sooooooooo much! And for those complaining about DC fans, the only bad people are the scalpers at Wiz games. Why do us DC citizens hate Philthy? Well I doubt that it’s just us lol

Overrated: Any Texas town, Boston

Underrated: Portland, New York City, Pittsburgh

Yeah, Baltimore is dangerous

That’s a laugh and a half…
