Underrated and overrated college towns

When choosing a university to attend, location in a college town ( and surrounding area) is very important to me. What college towns do you think is overrated, and those that you think are underrated ( list may be as long as you would like). If desired, evaluate on the college towns( such as your reason of rating).

Underrated:
East Lansing, Michigan

Overrated:
Athens, Ga
Boulder, Co
Philadephia, Pa

No way is Athens overrated!

In my opinion Athens, Ga is completely overrated as a college town.

^^ and how much time have you spent in Athens? It is a wonderful college town. A college town is just that- NOT a big city with lots of fine dining and museums. It is a town that exists, in large part, to support the educational institution that is located there. It offers services to the students and employees of that educational institution.
Boulder is pretty neat, too.

^^ Coolbrezze thinks East Lansing is underrated as a college town which totally impeaches his/her judgment.

College towns that I’ve listed overrated do not mean I think they are not nice towns/ college towns. Just overrated when mentioning as a college town. Again, yes Athens, Ga is overrated as a college town ( I’m not saying is not a nice town for college students).

^^ I’m still not hearing your reasons for saying Athens is overrated nor a report of all the time you have spent in Athens.

Underrated:
Blacksburg, VA

Overrated:
IDK. Maybe Chapel Hill, NC.

That won’t be needed.

underrated: Philadelphia, providence, Baltimore.
Overrated: Malibu (pepperdine. lol), chapel hill, evanston (LOL!), and UofChicago’s location…which although it says “chicago”…it still takes a good 15-20 minutes via public transportation to get to the REAL downtown lol.

Extremely Overrated: Radford, VA

I don’t think Boulder is overrated.

I’ve been there twice, and I (at least) think it’s pretty awesome.

How can a whole town be overrated or underrated? And how is Philadelphia overrated? Nobody thinks highly of Philadelphia. It terms of image, that city can only go up! hehe! And how is East Lansing underrated? It isn’t even on the radar screen. Outside of the state of Michigan, nobody has heard of East Lansing, so how can it be under or over rated?

Well, if I must give titles to overrated and underrated town, here we go:

Overrated:
Boston: Nothing wrong with Boston. It is one of the top 5 large cities in the Northeast and one of the top 25 large cities in North America. But it is not a “college town”.

Underrated:
That’s a tough one. There are many:
Athens, GA
Bloomington, IN
Burlington, VT
Columbia, MO
Corvallis, OR
Eugene, OR
Gainesville, FL
Iowa City, IA
Ithaca, NY

But like I said college towns are generally neither under or overrated. They get the reputation they deserve. College towns like Ann Arbor, Austin, Boulder, Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, Madison etc… have well established reputations for being pleasant college towns. None of those twons can be labled as underrated because they are quite well known, but then agasin, none of them can be considered overrated because they really are great towns.

Dang, Alexandre beat me to it! Poor Philly, it really is a good college town (or at least a popular one when you go by the sheer multitude of schools and students in and around it)

PS Alexandre are you still in Dubai? What’s going on out there? I hear the economy is tanking and just got an infusion from Abu Dhabi?

Dubai is definitely tanking. Anybody with a second rate Economics degree could have told you its model was completely unrealistic. Very few educated people are surprised by what happened. Thankfully, Abu Dhabi will bail it out this time. In a way, the downturn hasbeen good for Dubai. Now, they can adjust their expectations to a more reasonable (and attainable) level.

I don’t think Ithaca is all that underrated, because it usually makes the list someplace when people talk about best college towns, or best small cities to live.

Possibly some towns in the heartland might be underrated, because fewer outsiders from the coasts have seen them. The ones I’ve seen, that seem like they would be pretty good, are: Lawrence, KS, Columbia, MO, and Iowa City, IA.

Underrated: Pittsburgh, Charleston

Underrated Berkeley and Los Angeles.

Overrated

East Coast towns like in Connecticut, Boston, etc.

Overrated - the college students rarely venture into town, even though they are right across the street! They perceive it as hoity-toity and too expensive. But the parents love it!
