someone started a thread like this elsewhere, but it was just about all schools in general. so i thot i might start this thread pertainint to engineering.

soo…

what do u think us the most underrated engineering school? overrated?

University of Alaska Fairbanks is highly underrated. It really is an excellent academic institution for engineering. Especially mining/petroleum/geological.

I’m sure that in those fields, Alaskan universities are well-respected. But you wouldn’t want to study compE there, because they only teach compE-technology.

Save your breath Tom, as far as alchemist is concerned, petroleum/mining is all there is. It’s the bee’s knees, dontchaknow.

Honestly, what type of criteria are you looking at for underrated vs. overrated? Depending on that, you could probably make a case for just about any school to be underrated or overrated.

I’d say the service academies are underrated. They’re not ranked against the big engineering schools that offer PhDs, despite being comparable in quality for undergraduate work.

boneh3ad had a fair question. I was wondering the same thing actually. If you’re basing it on one’s opinion, it wouldn’t be a very fair or accurate assessment. How many programs is one person really familiar with? Only a handful in most cases.

These schools are usually ignored because their overall prestige isn’t exactly up to par with, let’s say Michigan or Berkeley, but when it comes down to engineering, they are right there, especially UIUC and give or take Purdue, one or two spot difference isn’t much.

lol @ the people taking this thread so seriously. I’m gonna be a homer and say UIUC is underrated. I really don’t think any school is overrated in this department.
