The University of California, San Diego’s alumni magazine claimed in 2004 that the recreation department first offered an underwater basket weaving class 20 years earlier in 1984, as reported in the UCSD Guardian,[15] and The College Buzz Book 2006 notes that at UCSD “There is a comprehensive recreation program that offers classes from yoga to martial arts and underwater basket weaving, not to mention wallyball!”.[16] Since 1980, Reed College in Portland, Oregon has offered an underwater basket weaving class during Paideia, its festival of learning that offers informal, non-credit courses.[17]</p>

<p>The Student Resource Center at The University of Arizona offered a submerged snorkelling basket-weaving course in Spring 1998.[18][19] In early 2009, a Rutgers University scuba diving instructor offered a one-off course.[20][21] Underwater Basket Weaving is a trademark of the US Scuba Center, Inc,[22] which offers a specialty class designed to improve diving skills from which participants can “take home a memorable souvenir”.
