My underwire bras have never set of the alarm. If it did, I’m getting old and cranky enough that I would probably do the whole undoing it under my shirt and wriggling the straps down my arms thing and take the darn thing off. Bet their faces would be redder than mine (despite my rosacea).

swimcatsmom, I’d probably do the same, because I’m also old and cranky. How about burning the darn thing on the spot? :)

I have no idea how safe these “safer” machines are, because, well… we are supposed to trust the manufacturer. A nice backrub always beats any additional radiation, IMO. Besides, TSA folks need to practice their patdown skills once in a while. I do not think the X-ray machines were removed just because the software was not upgraded on time. I suspect there could be some other issues…

Nope, underwires don’t set off the scanner. I have a substantial quantity of titanium in my body and even that doesn’t set off the machine.

I wear underwires & I am not very big chested–I just like the way they make my clothes hang. I have not set anything off wearing them but if I thought I might, I would go to Walmart & buy a cheap sports bra. Actually for long flights & overnight I might get the sports bra anyway.

The quart baggie is only for liquid things. Make 2 plastic toiletries bags–one the ziplock one for the little no-more-than-3 oz bottles, and the other for the other toiletries that are not liquid — stick deodorant (which I do not like but which I use for flying), toothbrush, q-tips, emory board, etc. Nowadays you can get “sample size” shampoos & such at Walmart, CVS, etc in exactly 3 oz size and you want ones that say “3 oz” on the bottle or the TSA person who is in a bad mood thinks they hold more!

If you do not like the brand, dump it & pour in your fave.

I also use elastic waist athletic pants (comfy for flying & make great PJ pants in hotels) and I wear sandals–no tying & untying shoes. Just kick them off. My daughter thinks I am the queen of the dorks but I wear wool knee sox with leather sandals – all the time in winter. Very handy in airports. Quite dorky but I change to white sweat sox in summer—the only people who will see me are the airport & plane people & I don’t care about them. Haul off the sweat sox before you walk out to the taxi stand.

When you are packing, put your clothes into “jumbo” size ziploc bags – squeeze the air out of them & zip up. It makes more room in your suitcase, and if they have to open your case your clothes will be easy to move around without messing them up, and they can see what everything is.

When you are packing, make everything neat. The xray machine will “see” jumbled-up phone charging wires, iPads, jacks, & such as a bomb. One of my daughter’s classmates “packed” for Italy at the last minute by throwing everything into her suitcase in a mashed up mess. When she got to the hotel in Roma, everything in the case was neatly folded and stacked!

Have a great trip!

I wish the TSA agents that routinely go through my checked baggage were so considerate. :(

Regarding metal detectors and security… I had surgery and they planted metal screws and plates inside my cheek bone area in order to hold my jaw in the right position. If I go through those scanners, will the alarm go off? No right?

A caution if you are packing anything breakable. TSA may open your things and not repack them as nicely as you did originally. TAPE bubble wrap DIRECTLY to breakables so that it will remain attached. We didn’t and one of the bottles we had packed carefully but NOT taped bubble wrap to broke and didn’t get from HI to CA. When I taped bubble wrap around the bottles from HI to CA, USPS got everything safely there.

The metal detectors MAY detect metal in your body. It’s best if you let the TSA folks know before you walk through the detector or ask to be patted down if you’re in doubt. It can depend on the sensitivity of the machine you’re walking through. I always opt for the pat down.

My MIL had hips replaced & got letters from the doctor to carry with her saying she was packing metal

^^^Absolutely untrue. I have been through many many metal detectors and full body screens, and underwires have never set of any alarm.

I also have had titanium implants in my jaw for 2 years and they have not set them off. Larger metal implants or plates might I suppose. (I do have a card that I was given that says I have the implants, it may be for this very purpose but I was rather groggy when they gave it to me and never did get round to asking!)

A few years ago underwire bras could and did set off the old hand held wands. Unfortunately, I was one of the embarrassed victims. Now however, many bra designers use a plastic “wire”. Glad I switched! ;)

Why do these old threads get episodically bumped by a new poster with a zero post count? This seems to be the second time for this thread. Seems funny that someone would register on a college site to post about underwire bras ;)
