Me and my spouse are unemployed , we are fully sponsered by my cousin beside few money coming from a rent of overseas property

we havenot filled Tax return for 2012 , but my wife want to apply for college federal aid

We are requested to show either Tax return / verification of non filling

I have fears if i submitted the transcript of non filling I will be subject for delay
or verification procedure from the college or department of education based on their doubts that someone can live without income

Will that cause me any issues ? or it is likely to beleive that we do not have any source of income and we are fully sponsered by some one else.

If you truly have no income other than the rental and if the rental income truly didn’t require filing a US tax return, then you have no choice but to do the non-filer verification. I can’t speak to the requirements to file a return in your situation.

Yes, the college very well may question how you can survive on no income and may require you to explain.

Question 44j on fafsa:

https://fafsa.ed.gov/fotw1314/help/totalMoneyReceived.htm

This is a fuzzy area that might depend on the exact arrangements you have with your cousin. After you explain the situation to the school, they may determine that an amount needs to be entered for this question which would affect the amount of aid received.

Yes, that would cause a delay but your only other option is to not apply for aid.

You need to report the money on this question ‘What other money has been paid on your behalf?’ in FAFSA.

Not necessarily. It would need to be reported here ONLY if the money were actually paid to a third party (for example: landlord, car insurance company, credit card company) on the student’s behalf. If it were simply paid directly to the student, it might need to be reported somewhere, but not in response to this particular question.

Money paid on the independent student’s behalf must be reported only if it the money is used to pay bills in the students name … if the lease is in the student’s name, or if the credit card/insurance/phone bill are in the student’s name … and if the other person pays it … only then is it reportable. If you must provide evidence of how you survive on no income, you would list the rent money as other untaxed income (it should be on your FAFSA), and you would be honest about how you eat, have a roof over your head, etc. Don’t be worried; just be honest.
