Sounds like both the OP and their parents might be strongly influenced by rankings and wouldn’t necessarily consider a transfer to a school that has less (ranking-induced) cachet than UNC (which includes pretty much everywhere they already got in aside from maybe UW/UCSD if West Coast is ultimate destination…and I doubt they’d get to do CS at UW.)
I’m noting a couple of things with curiosity:
a) the switch from 100% pre-med focused to business/CS seems pretty abrupt.
b) crying every day could indicate some underlying mental health issue that you might want to address before making any drastic changes. Let’s say, for the sake of simplicity, that your current grades are not going to get you into a stronger brand than UNC – at best you might manage a lateral transition. And it sounds like you’re still feeling wounded from all the rejection you experienced last spring.
Have you gone to a therapist and/or been evaluated for depression?
(I do think that a transfer might still at some point be a good idea but first I think addressing any underlying issues would be prudent. Wherever you go, there you are. Feeling fragile/sad/uncertain/etc. is probably not a great mentality for transferring in somewhere new.)
These schools are very different, what appeals to you about USC? Also saw that you weren’t accepted to USC last year, so with just one semester of college under your belt, I doubt that decision will be different this time around. If you aren’t applying for financial aid that could help.
I’m sorry you are unhappy and you can certainly put some apps in while you continue to try and find your peeps at UNC this coming semester. If you only apply to reaches and/or schools that denied you last year, it is most likely you will be at UNC next fall.
I agree with @AustenNut re: Santa Clara. It’s a very well-respected school in the Bay Area (where I live) and the opportunities to intern with tech companies will far outweigh any perceived US News ranking drop (their Leavey School of Business is very well-ranked, too). It’s a beautiful campus, the weather is damn near perfect, it’s a smaller school (but not tiny).
These may be your real issues with your current school rather than academics.
The roommate issue can be solved in the near future.
Excluding yourself from others due to an incident early on in your time at UNC almost certainly can be overcome with time, personal growth, and a change of environment. UNC-Chapel Hill is large enough to afford one opportunities to change his/her immediate environment.
My suggestion is to send out transfer applications while also considering how you can make your time at UNC more comfortable & enjoyable.
If counseling is available, consider taking advantage of this opportunity; if not, then talk to your advisor and ask for suggestions regarding your concerns.
Could this be the root of your unhappiness with UNC, because you felt forced into attending even though you believed prior to then that you had other choices?
USC may be much easier to get into as a transfer. Acceptance rates for transfers are around 24%.
If cost is not an issue, they have an excellent business school with awesome connections in Southern California and you might be able to minor in CS.
I know a few students there and they love it. Campus is beautiful and LA has a lot to do. I would guess the UNC vibe though seemingly similar with USC is much different. Don’t know if ethnic diversity and cultural differences are important, but the two colleges, I would assume, are night and day.
Just realize that transferring may not resolve the issues you face. First seek help, then try to resolve the problems, but keeping options open by applying to various schools that may fit you better.
