Unhappy--the 2% Charles Schwab CC is being d/c'd

We have a Capital One card and, on several occasions, they have provided great customer service. Recently, my H lost his card. We called to report it and had the new card in our hands in less than 24 hours.

Also, back in 2007 while travelling in Spain, due to problems with our local bank’s debit card, we needed to use our Cap One card to take out advances at the atm’s in Madrid. Of course, I had not set up a PIN before our trip (since we just aren’t cash advance kind of people). I called Cap One from our hotel and they let me set it up over the phone and it was operational within no more than 30 minutes. What a relief that was!

Each of these calls went to a customer service office here in the US, so there was no problem with me not being able to understand the rep. I have no problem recommending Cap One to anyone looking for a new card company.

My credit union gives me 2% back. No fees. No foreign transaction fees Very large ATM network. No bank fees of any kind. And I don’t have to give any money to the corporate crooks.

mini,

I looked into that with a local crdit union, they will give you those benefit except you need to transfer your auto deposit to their account and required us to use the debit card x number of times per month.

Sad. I don’t have any of those requirements. (But I would have been happy to use auto deposit to them, and I use nothing but their debit card.)

IM2006.

All credit card companies have that kind of service. I lost my wallet in Switzerland and on the third day I had all the cards delivered to the hotel I was staying.

^^mini, that’s great, but it does not help our OP who is located in HI, not in WA (that’s why I did not mention our credit union). HIMom, maybe you can locate a credit union like that in HI?

I sure wish we had credit unions that offer 2% cash back. None that I am aware of offer this. Since we have a HUGE untapped HELOC, I can’t imagine our credit score should fall much (if at all) from us closing this CC, even tho it has a large credit limit on it. Will look around but the best CCs I can find around here are about 1% max at local banks & don’t believe our local credit unions offer cash back at all.

Just reading the thread now but my schwab card (along with my Costco AmEx) are my favorites and this is the first I’m hearing that they’re doing away with the 2% back–how did you hear? I’m in CA…can’t imagine it varies by state but I’m surprised I haven’t been notified. That’s even the card we gave to D1 and D2 when they went away to school for them to use when they incurred charges we agreed to cover.

I do have to say that we also have a Capital One that we don’t use often but, when we have, the customer service has been great. I know someone posted to the contrary but I’m not aware that the Schwab card doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees; that’s the reason we have Cap One as we use it exclusively when we’re out of the country.

Once I confirm that the 2% is going away, I’ll be seeking out a new card too…very disappointing.

was talking with their customer service department about another issue & they said they’re sending out notices this month (oct). they are totally eliminating the card. you can read about it on the web as well. fatwallet and others have written about it on blogs. :frowning: it is H’s & my favorite card. :frowning: i also love the AmEx for gas & costco purchases & electronics & things where I need extended warranty.

collage1,

Perhaps you throw away all those credit card ads automatically, but FIA card had send out two letters regarding this change, one was from FIA and the other was from Bank of America welcome you to their family. Its a sad day.

We have switched to Chase Freedom.

If you fly on Delta alot, most definitely the Delta American Express card. They have a deal right now for the Platinum card that gives you 15,000 mileage qualifying miles towards elite status, and 40,000 miles. The annual fee is $150, but they give you a $100 statement credit. The benefits are that you get airmiles when you use the card, get alot of free benefits (like special deals, $25 sky club access, free 1 bag checking for up to 8 people). Plus a free companion ticket on Delta. You don’t qualify for this offer if you have another Delta card, darn it.

You can get to the promotion via this page: https://www.deltaamexcard.com/default.aspx</a>
Have to put in your Medallion number to see if you qualify.

Oh, one other deal is the Chase sapphire card. Only 1% back (except for on restaurants, that is 2%), but no yearly fee and they gave me a $500 statement credit. Are they crazy or what? We always pay off our cards, they won’t get fees or interest off of us.

I got the most ridiculous credit card offer in the mail today. It’s the Visa Black Card (www.blackcard.com). 1% cash back, 24 hour conceirge (answers questions, arranges travel), and membership at 600 airport lounges are the benefits. The cost is $495 per year. Are they kidding?! Who would pay that kind of money for a credit card? I think you’d have to live at airports to benefit from it.

It’s Visa’s competitor to the American Express black card (the “Centurion”), which has a $5000 initiation fee and a $2500 annual fee.

^^LOL. It looks like our Costco Amex is a much better deal! .

^^ Those "black: cards are created for those who can charge $50k or more/mo, the costco cards are for the rest of the slobs that make a living on wages…:)

They must be lowering their standards because we don’t charge anywhere near that $50K/month. We’re Costco Amex users, too.

I have called the FIA service to clear what our rights are…
The FIA card is being bought by B of A, so by Nov. 1st they are getting away with the 2% we have been enjoying. If you do nothing AFTER Nov. 1st, you will be sending a B of A card called “B of A Privilages” Card, that has an ANNUAL FEE of $75, but the first year fee is waived!!! It has 1% cash back on everything, though…uhg.

However, if you call after Nov. 1 and ask them to switch to the B of A Cash Rewards card instead (YOU HAVE TO CALL after Nov. 1), this card will not have an annual fee and it has the following cash backs:

3% Gas
2% Grocery
1% Everything else.

We were having trouble with our Discover credit card not being accepted at some of our usual haunts, so we began a search for a new credit card. For us, Capital One has worked well. It offers 1% back and there are no fees when used in another country (a huge plus for us since our son was about to study abroad).

Customer service is ok (according to my husband, Discover had the best customer service). No horror stories with Capital One.

I found that most of the restaurants I go to do not accept Amex card, they only take Visa/Master, I normally use the FIA card for the 2%, now I won’t be able to. Any ideas?

I think from now on, it looks like we have to carry different cards for different use…

The only places I go that don’t take Amex is my hair salon and my chiropractor.
I have the same Mastercard that I got as a 18 yr old college freshman. I don’t pay an annual fee but I don’t earn any rewards. I pay off in full each month. I don’t think I use it enough to make it worth the hassle of finding a better reward card.
Usually use my Costco Amex or my Discover.
Thinking about it D1 might be spending 6 months in China. Maybe she should look into getting a Capital One card. Her present Visa is through Wells Fargo.
