Union vs. Brown

I’m concerned about the social atmosphere, not academics (obvious Brown is better). But I read this in another thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/union-college-new-york/583497-ask-ill-answer.html</a>.

So Brown is pretty northeast, it’s pretty liberal arts, and it’s a pretty college. Are the people at Brown “quirky intellectuals?” Or are they preppy? Both Union and Brown are expensive.

I wouldn’t call Brown “preppy,” at least as a whole. Definitely not fratty, and while athletics are popular, they aren’t the most important thing for many students. Brown students tend to be a little more hipster, and could be called “quirky intellectuals.” However, as I’m sure you know, it’s hard to describe the student body of a school as large as Brown - we’re pretty diverse!

so does that mean the fishbowling rumors are true? lol. I know everybody at brown isn’t high haha.

I noticed you are in PLME! Did you apply to Union’s LIM program? I really want to get into PLME, but I don’t come from a top-tier high school or anything. We don’t even have APs.

I didn’t apply to Union - PLME was the only BS/MD program that I applied to. For me, it was Brown first and then PLME.

I have great insight on Union and I want to apply to Brown next year. Union is a beautiful campus in a not so nice neighborhood, it’s actually interesting because the “ghetto” is across the street from Union and once you cross the street it’s beautiful old homes that the wealthy lived in. Same could be said about Providence. Union has a great location, if you want to go to NYC, Boston, Montreal, Toronto are all so close and they do school trips. Brown is so close to Boston and is near a great mall and of course Thayer Street. All schools are going to have preppy, wealthy, and unique people. Here’s the big deciding factors. If you want a big greek scene or a good sport following (hockey), pick Union. Want more of a night club scene, ability to pick your courses? Pick Brown. Both schools have graduates that have done extremely well. I lived 20 mins. from Brown and now live 20 mins. from Union with my father working at Union. Quick fact- Union was going to be an Ivy but it somehow fell though.

^That is if I get into Brown! Haha thanks. I don’t care for Greek, but hockey is a lot more pleasurable to watch than football. I love travelling so Union sounds great! Plus they have integrated study abroad for you, which is also awesome.

Thayer Street: I read the Wikipedia article on it, I’ll be sure to visit! I love how they have a lot of independent shops and restaurants!
