unique admission circumstance

i heard back a few days ago telling me i was accepted. the letter, however, was from the department of engineering!

is this normal for michigan? i have heard that usually, a student is admitted to the general college at first and then selects a department/major to pursue after two-three years. so what does this mean for me? is it a good thing?

which exact college did you apply to?

Hopefully, you didn't accidentally apply to engineering when you wanted LSA. If you didn't choose engineering, you'd better call them and get it corrected soon.

no, i did apply for engineering. my confusion was that i thought that people are accepted into the general college first and then later join a department. is this true?

thats true for some departments like business. but for engineering you don't apply through LSA. So your circumstance is normal

That's pretty weird if you sent the application for LSA. For essay questions, there are specific essays for each school; as in, why did you choose certain majors/areas of interest in LSA? And I assume that there are similar essays for Engineering, Nursing, etc.

For a better idea of what happened, and if you haven't already done so, create a friend account on wolverine access (instructions are on umich's website and in an email you received after submitting your app). Once you log into wolverine access--new and prospective student business--application status, then you can check your decision there too and also find out which school you actually applied to--LSA or engineering.

if you applied to the college of engineering, that's right. it's not a department, it's a separate school from the general college (LSA). i applied to CoE and my letter says i was accepted to the college of engineering as well. other schools have it where you apply to that actual college after your first year at something.
