I was recently talking to a friend who was already choosing classes for college next year and it got me thinking, what are some interesting/unique classes that Brown offers to its students without having any background knowledge/experience? For instance- my interviewer said he took an underwater archeology class, how cool is that?

There are absolutely tons. It really depends on what you’re interested in. For instance, some people might find “Black Lavender: black gay and lesbian plays” to be really cool. I personally would rather take a seminar on Roman highways or film architecture. Or a GISP on pirate history. Really, it depends on your interests, but there are many fantastic subjects taught here (and probably pretty much everywhere else too).

what’s a GISP?

Hip hop and culture, Guns and graphics, (comics books, graphic novels, and detective fiction), Marine biology of the Belize costal reefs, and AIDS: a global perspective come to mind…

There are a TON of interesting classes here! A ton! Some are hard to get into, but if you can’t get into one, there’s another you can find!!! That’s part of the reason I came here. :)

A GISP is a group independent study project

Atlantic Pirates (FYS)…sounds pretty damn cool
