Unique Dorm Situation?

I’ve been placed in a triple room with 2 other people. There’s supposedly a bathroom. The floor plan is really strange and even the residence hall people were confused when we called about it.

That is definitely strange. Is it an old building that’s been repurposed as a dorm?

So you and your two roommates are only in room 7? Not 8 or 9? It seems like 7 alone would be too small for three people, plus there’s no direct entrance into it.

When I look at it, what I assume is that it’s an old building and that these three connected rooms have been grouped into one triple. There appears to be two entrances into rooms 8 and 9. There may or may not be doors dividing 7 from 8 and 8 from 9. If there aren’t, maybe archways? 7B and 7A are probably a walk-in closet and the private bathroom. The little alcove thing in 8 looks like it’s some kind of closet, possibly.

I guess go into it with an open mind.

Edited to add: At my college, there’s a dormitory that used to be an apartment building, built probably in the 1940s. As such, there are some irregularly shaped rooms, rooms with non-working fireplaces, etc. Some triples have a big main area with two beds, then an arch doorway leading into a small room with one bed. It could be like that.

I’m pretty good with architectural plans but there must be a legend with that, no?

There’s no other resources or legend with the map. I’ve tried looking all over my school’s residential pages but nothing.

I’m not sure, but I know the building was built in the 1960s. It says all three of us are in 517, so I’m not really sure how it’d work.

Maybe try the Facebook group for your college? Someone else might be in/have previously been in a room like that.

Could you upload the whole floorplan, not just the section?

Sound advice here. I’ve stayed in some very oddly shaped and appointed rooms on different campuses throughout the years. They all worked out just fine.

The only dorm room I ever hated appeared to be an utterly conventional double, but it was directly above the dumpsters for the tower dorm it was in, so opening the window was often met with a blast of noxious odors, and there was an early morning “Wheep-wheep-wheep” beeping from the garbage trucks on a regular basis.

Moral of the story: In general, floor plan is not the thing that becomes a deal-breaker.

looks like 7A might be a separate bedroom and 7B is the bathroom?

Floor plans can be waaaay off. The floor plan for my D’s room her freshman year made it look like she had the largest room on the floor, when in fact she had the smallest room on the floor. Hopefully this is just a glitch on the drawing.

Please come back and tell us what it really looks like, @snoelle13!
