I have aspergers syndrome (slightly mild) and I have been able to overcome my social anxiety through volunteering in my community (250 hours+). I really feel as though volunteering has allowed me to interact with others, help my problem solving skills, and have a unique viewpoint of life. would this help me in admissions to selective colleges if i disclose this in my essay, perhaps? (i am applying to some ivies) I feel as though this is an important part of my life. Thanks!

The GC can mention this. Or the teachers. How hard you worked, the improvements you made, your great attitude, despite a challenge.

Not sure Aspergers is a hook. I believe it’s being dropped from the DSM (diagnostic guidelines.) Remember that your personal statement works best when it’s a show-not-tell. Congrats and good luck.

You are confusing “hook” with unique characteristic of the applicant. A “hook” is an institutional need (top athlete, top scholar, legacy, development admit, celebrity, etc.).

Your feature doesn’t rise to the level of an institutional need. It’s just something unique about you – which may or may not catch someone’s attention. Good luck.
