Unique Qualities of School X

When the college requires an essay that discusses what makes their undergrad program and other qualities of the school attract you, how would you respond if you don’t know a lot about them?

My main reasons were: Close to home, prestigious school, and ranked top 15 nationally

I don’t really know their history or significance of the programs. Is it okay to write after doing research from websites, or will they see that I’m getting facts from the school’s site or wikipedia or something?

Best is to visit the school, because you’d get stuff that nobody would ever publish online. If you can’t, YES RESEARCH FROM WEBSITES. But you have to be careful with this. I’ve written drafts that were from website research that had elicited positive responses. Other drafts were simply name dropping the crap out of it. In those essays, I just crammed as many names as possible without actually saying much about why I liked it.

I’m not sure about using prestige and rankings to justify why you like the school. I personally will not in my essays, but this may just be me.
