Uniquely unique schools?

What are some of the most unique universities out there? I mean really unique - Brown comes to mind with its lack of course requirements. I don’t mean things like having a fish for a mascot.

In the end, I don’t think anyone can beat Deep Springs: having less than 30 students and faculty, living alone out in the desert doing farm work for two years seems to be the top unique school right now.

But anyways - what other schools come to mind?

Georgetown- excellent location, professors, and political science programs.

gtown is a unique school, every time I visit it seems like everyone is depressed about not getting into an Ivy league school…It depressed me.

Really? I didn’t get that feeling at all when I went there. I don’t really think that people who apply to Gtown would have trouble getting in to an Ivy, anyway. This sounds more like Tufts than Georgetown to me.

Reed is a very unique school.

St. John’s, except there are two, Anapolis and New Mexico.

Shimer, St. Johns (x2), Thomas Acquinas

I think Shimer has like 20 kids and its a Great Books program.

Northwestern. Why? Because it’s the only top school named after a direction, lol.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=7807&highlight=great+books

There’s also Northeastern

Lol, I know; that’s why I said top school :)

Slipper, what can you tell me about Reed?

yeah cali I’ve visited a few friends of mine down there and whenever I go i get the feel that most of the students don’t want to be there…well except for people in foreign service. It seems like most of them are depressed because they got rejected by ivys. My friends at georgetown also find this sentiment to be prevalent throughout the campus. There was even an article in the hoya about it.

http://www.thehoya.com/viewpoint/011703/view1.cfm

I don’t know any school that doesn’t have students with at least some envy for those at other schools.

Wow… what a great find Bern! I have to say, that is absolutely the feeling I got when I visited TUFTS! Brilliant kids, who, for some reason or another had to settle for TUFTS! More people should read that book Harvard Schmarvard! I was being pushed hard by teachers and advisors to apply ED to Vassar, when I visited, I knew immediately I didn’t fit in socially. I decided to apply to Skidmore ED, knowing that it didn’t have the same name as Vassar or NYU or the other schools my fam went to, but I knew it was a perfect match for me. Hope they felt the same, LOL. The amazing thing is how supportive my folks and his family were considering they all went to IVIES

yeah i know there is some of that at every school kk but at gtown this sentiment is really dominant. At most schools people will occasionally say to themselves, “wow, I wish i were at x college…” however, at gtown it seems like most people are just ****ed off at the world because they got rejected from the ivys. it’s an overarching sentiment. i actually felt like people resented me because i do go to penn, a school from what my gtown friends tell me that a lot of gtown people got rejected from.

Ah, I see:)

Webb - they only offer 1 major : something about the engineering of boatbuilding. Each grade has a maximum of 25 kids. It’s housed in the mansion of Herbert L. Pratt.

Hahaha Naropa…I was just reading about in the US News thing…founded on eastern religion

New College of Florida…no grades, each student has a personal assessment written by the professor at the end of each class.

Slipper, there is no such thing as VERY UNIQUE. It’s unique, or it’s not.
My D attends Evergreen State College-- no grades, no classes. Instead there are teacher and self-evaluations and interdisciplinary programs.
