I’m planning to double major in haas and maybe econ, with a language minor. However, as I’m planning out all the classes i need to take in 4 years, the total amount of units is something >150. I know L&S has a max unit ceiling of 136 units, does it mean once I have >136 units, I can no longer register for the following semester even I’m just in my 3rd year?

Also, if I decided to apply to Haas in my junior year, since haas is a 2-year program, will L&S allow me to stay for my 5th year to complete my Haas degree?

Special cases like yours are considered and almost always approved. I know people who are in CoE which is very strict about graduating within 4 years but get approval to stay a couple more semesters at Cal to finish double majors.

The 136-unit ceiling applies to students who want to stay beyond 4 years. I remember reading somewhere that you can do as many units as you want as long as you graduate in 8 semesters (not including summer sessions).

I think you can stay for 5 years if you apply for Haas in junior year. I think the 136-unit limit is more talk than action… that is, if you really need those semesters for whatever reason (as in to graduate) then there’s no reason they will deny you of it, although they just won’t be entirely happy about it.

a key thing to remember is that summer units aren’t counted in that 136 total, so you may not even need to appeal at all if you take summer school at least twice (maybe even once, since there’s a lot of overlap between econ and haas prereqs)

Summer units are counted if we are talking about going beyond your semester limit (8 for freshman admits? [not sure]/4 for transfers [I’m sure of this]).

I’m pretty sure that they don’t count summer units against you in any way. For COE taking classes in a summer shouldn’t count as 1 of your 8 semesters, and for L&S it shouldn’t count towards the unit limit.

I don’t see why they would count a summer as a semester for a transfer student, if they only get 4 semesters here, but I only know that it shouldn’t for freshman admits.

I’m a transfer, and the L&S person told me that summer units count towards the unit count if you want to go beyond your college’s unit cap. I didn’t say anything about the summer session counting as a whole semester (i.e. summer 2010 counting as one of my 4 “given” semesters here at Berkeley)
