Unit limitations for CCC-only students and transferring to a few UC's and Cal Poly SLO

Hey guys,

I’ve already googled the crap out of this. I’ve searched in this forum and on the UC general website, the websites for each specific UC, and also on Cal Poly’s website, but I’m not finding any concrete answers (plus, I tried calling and all the admissions offices are closed for the day).

So anyway, I’ve attended Irvine Valley College (a community college) for the last 2.5 years. I’m going to be “graduating” this upcoming spring in May, and if I end up taking all the classes I have planned, I’m going to have completed 97.5 semester units. Now I know that UC’s cap transfer credit at around 70 semester units, and then sort of toss out the excess units, but still give you subject credit for the remaining courses you’ve completed. Similar practice with Cal Poly. What I DON’T know and what I can’t seem to find out is if I apply for TAG to UCI and then apply for transfer to UCI, UCD, UCSB, UCLA, and Cal Poly, will my units somehow exceed the maximum credits you can transfer with? Like, will I be automatically rejected/not even have my applications considered due to how many CCC-only units I have? I’m a biology/psych “double major” (aka, premed who plans on majoring in bio and minoring in psych, or vice versa depending on the campus), and I’ve taken/will take the minimum number of required classes to fulfill both majors.

TL;DR…

  • Applying to:
  • UCI (TAG as a bio major, majoring in bio w/ minor in psych)
  • UCD (psych major w/ minor in bio)
  • UCSB (psych major w/ minor in bio)
  • UCLA (psych major w/ minor in bio)
  • Cal Poly SLO (psych major w/ minor in bio)
  • Will have taken 92.5 semester units ONLY at a CCC. Haven’t attended any other 4-year schools; just IVC and a couple classes from Saddleback.
  • GPA is currently 3.88
  • Will my TAG be rejected based on the 92.5 semester-CCC-only units? And will I be rejected from all my UC’s based on those 92.5 semester units?

No, you will not be rejected for having that many units.

@Happy2Help Thank you for the fast reply! Out of curiosity, is there a link or a document that states this information anywhere?

With >70 units from only CCs, you will not, for UC purposes, be considered a high unit junior or senior level transfer who will have more limited transfer options.

@ucbalumnus Thanks for the link. However, that’s one of the many documents I came across in my googling and wasn’t sure if those units applied to strictly CCC students and CCC/UC/CSU students alike. Thank you for clarifying!

Under “Limits on transfer credit”: “If all of your coursework is/was completed at a two-year college, you will not be in danger of having excessive units because all your credit is at the lower division level” - See more at: https://secure.californiacolleges.edu/college_planning/university_of_california/transfer_admission/Planning_to_Transfer.aspx#sthash.gWm08Zms.dpuf

Re: #4

All CC units are considered lower division units, if that helps you understand the document in #3. Upper division units come from taking upper division (junior/senior level) courses at four year schools.
