I got credit for 2nd semester French. Would I be able to repeat the 2nd semester, so that I’ll remember enough French to do well in 3rd semester French?

I was thinking of taking:

Math 126 (Calculus II)
Category 1 or 4 GE course
French 150 (French 2)

Would this schedule meet the minimum unit requirement? If it doesn’t could I take some freshman seminars to fulfill it? I don’t want to overload my schedule.

I’ll have about 40 (maybe, 43) units coming into USC because I completed an application update and I’m taking summer classes. Those 40 units come from AP courses, college courses during high school, and a few college courses after high school. I’ll have some GEs covered b/c of some classes I’ve taken (Cat 2, 3, 5, and maybe, 1).

If you got credit for 2nd semester then I assume you were placed into 3rd semester french. You should take the written test and see if you can get out of it entirely.

It is a good idea to start slow, make sure you’re adjusted to college. If you placed into French 3, you should be able to take french 2 again (but note below)

That’s 12 units. While that counts as full time, I don’t know if you can pay per-unit as a full time student - meaning you may have to pay the flat rate (16 units) anyway. But if you have enough units transferred, it may not matter anyway. But check terms of fin aid/scholarships just in case

Also, you have some flex in your schedule in terms of P/NP grading. You can pick any one of your GE classes to be taken pass/no pass, and foreign languages may be taken P/NP as well (double check with your advisor on this one)

If you’re not serious about french and are just doing it to be done with the requirement, you may want to consider if you know enough to get a P grade in french 3 without repeating french 2 first.

You can also take free electives (up to a limit) P/NP

Did you take the French AP test? if so, wait until your scores are back to see if you received a 4 or 5, which will satisfy USC’s foreign language requirement.

nhsharvard: I called the transfer office and the rep. told me what you basically did: I can take courses and have them transferred this summer, before I enroll. I also emailed the Director of Advising, and this is the response I got:
“Once you are admitted to SC, you may not take any GEs elsewhere. Also, the lower division Writing requirement cannot be satisfied by doing a Writing course elsewhere. It is not a good idea to try to get a jump start by courses at another institution before you begin here next fall.
It’s important that you take your GEs here.” Any thoughts?

NonSenescent, you are allowed to take GE courses outside of USC before enrollment. I would recommend it (if you have the time). You can look at articulation agreements community colleges have with USC.

I think the advising director talked about the importance of GEs because she/he wanted you to study the courses offered at USC (which differs from my opinion).

The philosophies of colleges differ greatly. If I were you, I would take GE courses during the summer. It would save you quite a bit of money.

nhsharvard, my thoughts exactly: I’d like to save the money and take GEs in the summer. The email kind of threw me off-I never knew that the director would be so against taking GEs elsewhere. Thanks!

Actually, I might double major or graduate a year early depending on whether or not i can fulfill the requirements for my second major (maybe econ, or minor in mathematical finance).
