Opinion on oos admission to Univ Michigan vs. oos admission to UMD Scholars ???

For what major (or general area of interest?)

Biology / Sciences/ Pre Med

I assume you’re OOS for both?

Michigan is generally seen as “more prestigious”, but it is not significantly more so that that would factor into med school admissions in the slightest.

I also would not take scholars into account. The program is nice but it is really no reason to choose MD over another school. What is cool about MD is that while scholars is a first and second-year program, there are many more cool programs for upperclassmen, such as Hinman CEOs, Beyond the Classroom, etc. Scholars is a great way to get your foot in the door and start transitioning into leadership activities on the campus. But again it can’t be seen as just an “end,” it has to be seen as the beginning to many more opportunities on the campus, and should be looked at in a holistic light.

Otherwise, Anne Arbor versus DC are night and day.
The DMV versus Michigan is quite different, too, I’d imagine.

Ah, I see you are OOS, lol. I only mentioned that because IS versus OOS would be a huge cost diferential, and in this case I’d pick the cheaper one. But I see that they are probably about the same cost.

I think that it would be pretty difficult to give up the opportunity to attend the University of Michigan. In all honesty, though, you should consider whether the research/small classes of the Scholars program outweighs the opportunities at Michigan. You might want to check-out the common data set for Michigan to look at such information as class size, student-faculty ratio, etc. UMD has made tremendous strides in the last couple of decades, and, while not nearly as prestigious as Michigan, is an excellent school.
