UNIV100 vs HONR100?

I’m going to be a freshman in the honors program this fall, and I’m trying to figure out the 100-seminar thing. HONR100 might make the most sense and I think it’s what most/all people in the honors college do, but I saw on testudo that in regular UNIV100 there are two sections specifically for multiracial students. I don’t get to talk to other multiracial people a lot so I think that would be a really cool option, but a) I’m not sure if because I’m in honors, I have to take HONR100, and b) I just don’t know which one would make the most sense. It might be nice to meet people in honors, but I like the idea of something being specifically for multiracial students because it’s something that I’ve always wanted to be able to talk about but I usually can’t find people who have had the same experience as me. So I guess I have two questions:

  1. Are honors students allowed to enroll in the non-honors UNIV100 classes?
  2. If that’s allowed, which one do you think makes the most sense?
Thanks so much for your input! :)

Since its just a 1 credit course, you should do whatever makes you more happy, which seems to be meeting new people =]

Thanks, but I’m not entirely sure what you mean by that - I would be meeting new people either way, it just comes down to what I want to focus on. I’m hoping that someone on here familiar with the course can let me know if there are any significant differences between the honors option and the non-honors option, because if there isn’t I think I want to go with the more specialized one.

We don’t have to take both? I’d so much rather just take one, is that true?

^He’s choosing between the 2, not taking both.

@OP
Honestly, its an orientation class that won’t have that much of an impact, so choose whatever you feel comfortable with

Yeah oceanicole I’m pretty sure we just take one. And thanks yodelo, I guess I’ll just ask my advisor about it at orientation to decide what makes the most sense, I agree it’s not a huge deal either way. And I’m a girl btw ;)

Oh word, awesome! Thank youuu

Oh sorry smwhtslghtlydzed =]

I’m pretty sure you have to take HONR100 if you want to get the Honors Citation when you graduate.

[UMD Honors - Current Students - University Honors Courses](http://universityhonors.umd.edu/citation.php) The Honors site says you need a 1-credit “Honors Colloquium.” I’m not sure what other options for that there are besides HONR100 (if any).

Oh that’s a good point Bornin92, I hadn’t seen that - that was one of my concerns, that it wasn’t a choice. Hopefully I do get to choose, but if I have to take HONR100 that at least makes my choice easier…I guess I’ll just figure it all out at orientation!

Just as an update, I emailed UMD and they told me that I’m allowed to take UNIV100 instead of HONR100 if I want to. But they said that the courses are very different - I’m probably going to email tomorrow to ask why, but is anyone on here familiar with what these courses are like? Would I be missing out on anything if I don’t take the honors version?

Have you contacted the honors college specifically to see if taking something besides Honr100 gets in the way of your citation? Also, just as a side note, the Multuracial Biracial Student Association on campus is really active, so you should check it out in the fall!

Yeah, I contacted the honors college and they said it was fine to take either, so I’m just trying to figure out which one would make the most sense. And thanks for the heads up about the Multiracial Association - I’ll definitely check it out! :)

I’ve heard HONR100 is more work. Take with a grain of salt, I took GEMS100.

I don’t know what they do in UNIV100, but in HONR100 the only work we did was like a paragraph “journal entry” that we e-mailed to our TA each week (super easy) and one paper that was also pretty simple and straightforward. In fact I don’t think my paper was ever actually graded, because the Honors College Director lost it and asked me to e-mail it to him two hours before all grades were due in for the semester lol.
