Univeristy of Washington out-of-state

Does UW offer decent financial aid for out-of-state students?

Some, not much. https://admit.washington.edu/Paying/PurpleGold

Are you asking about need based aid? If so, the answer is, “no”.

If you have high test scores for the school, then you might get a small merit scholarship…but you’ll have to pay most of the school’s cost.

What are your test scores? How much will your family pay?

For autumn 2015, scholarship amounts range from $3,000 to $7,500 per year ($12,000 to $30,000 over four years) and were awarded to about one half of U.S. freshmen who are not residents of Washington State.

Since the cost is about $45k per year, you can see that $3k-$7500 per year isn’t much.

oh wow…are you thinking of being premed at UWash? Are you thinking that you might get into their med school? If so, BAD IDEA. UWash SOM is nearly impossible to get into as an OOS student.

You wouldn’t get much merit from UWash undergrad

If you’re premed, why are you applying to Vandy ED if your stats are low for the school? Do you not realize that you’re setting yourself up for GPA problems?

What do you mean by GPA problems? I think I can maintain a decent GPA at Vanderbilt.

Maintaining a “decent GPA” isn’t the issue. Getting a med-school-worthy GPA is another. You’d be one of the weaker students at Vandy. How do you think that will affect your chances of getting the A’s in the weeder premed prereqs?

We see this every year. Premeds hoping to get into reach schools, and when they do, they often find that their GPA’s suffer because they’re not one of the stronger students at the school.

For instance…there is a student here on CC who went to UTexas-Dallas for his first year…4.0…then he transferred to Vandy…now he reports that his GPA is no longer med-school-worthy. Think he’s second-guessing himself??

But, if you’re not sure about med school, and/or you think that you probably won’t end up going to med school, then getting a decent GPA is fine.

Why U Wash if you’re OOS??

I see this comment a lot. I understand that to maintain a GPA in college is much much harder than maintaining a GPA in high school. I also understand that getting a med-school-worthy GPA is difficult. It’s not impossible though!

A lot of my family lives in Washington. I only considered applying because of its location.

This is so true. It’s likely why only about 20-25% of premeds ever end up applying to med school…and only half of those ever end up in med school.

Do you have a Plan B if you don’t end up with a med-school worthy GPA?

That’s nice, but be aware that you won’t likely get much/any aid. Will your parents pay for OOS UWash costs?

If you’re going to go OOS, it would be better for you to choose a state where their med schools accept OOS students that have a tie with the state.

Because UWash SOM strictly accepts instate students and some OOS students from about 6 states that don’t have a med school (their states pay UWash SOM to accept some of their states’ students), it’s virtually impossible for other OOS students to get in.

I wasn’t aware that UWashington mainly only accepted in state students. I was only considering and now probably won’t now that I read that only about 10% of out of state students get in.

My back up plan is to still do something involving medicine. Such as being a physician’s assistant or nurse practitioner.

Since Vandy is a very high reach for you, pick some schools that will accept you, where you’re more certain that you can “shine,” and you know will be affordable.

(78% of Vandy’s frosh have an ACT math section of 30+)

How much will your family pay each year?

You mean the EFC? I’m not sure but it wasn’t very much. Maybe $10,000

No, I don’t mean EFC since most schools don’t “meet need.” So, your parents will pay $10k per year?

For instance, even with an EFC of $10k, UWash would expect your parents to pay the whole $45k per year.

Where all are you applying? What is your home state?

What are your financial safeties (the schools that you know FOR SURE that you have all costs covered and will accept you?)

My parents budget is 25k. I’m probably applying to University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, and Western Kentucky University because they are in-state schools I can afford, although they don’t have very good pre-med programs. I don’t have many options for OOS unless I can get scholarships.

Their “premed programs” are fine. You do know that premed just means taking specific classes to prep for med school? Those schools can do that. And you can major in anything you want. Look here for scholarship options: http://automaticfulltuition.yolasite.com/

What do you think premed is? There is no such thing as a “premed program”. Being premed just means taking a list of REGULAR classes that various STEM majors take. They’re just basic staple classes…nothing special or unique about them.

Your instate schools, particularly UK and UL are totally fine. Why do you think that they wouldn’t be?

That said, if you want to go OOS, then apply to schools that you know FOR SURE will give you enough merit for your stats.

There are a few nice LAC in Washington State that you could look at.

yes… Seattle Univ would likely give you a nice award…don’t know if it would be enough to get costs down to $25k.

However, if this student TRULY wants to go to med school, then choosing a west coast school doesn’t do him any favors, particularly when med school interviews will take him back across the country (since it’s unlikely he’d get interviewed at any on the west coast.)

We’ve been thru this. Interviews go on during fall and spring senior year. You’re often not give much/any choice for interview dates. If you have to travel across the country, then you could potentially lose 2-3 days of school. The interview is usually a several hour event including the actual interview(s), and med school tour.

@vonnegut98 You mention that your EFC wouldn’t be much, like maybe $10k…but then you say that your parents will pay $25k per year. It’s unusual for parents to say that they can pay 2.5 times their EFC.

Are you sure that their EFC would be that low if your parents can pay $25k per year? or is the money coming from elsewhere?
