Universities in the UK?

I would really love to go to a university in the UK (St. Andrew’s, Durham are top choices), but my family thinks that it’s a bad idea to go to school in another country. They say that they will support my decision, but I know they definitely don’t like the idea. I have never been away from home for more than a month, and I know it will be a very big adjustment, no matter where I go…
Does it sound like too much of an adjustment to an objective person? Has anyone gone to a university in another country? Was it manageable being so far from home?

It’s easier if you are near an airport with direct flights to the UK. With the internet, Skype, video conferencing, etc. There’s no difference between being a 6 to 8 hour flight or a 6 to 8 hour drive from home.

St. Andrews and Durham are both very good universities.
