University at Buffalo [no merit, SEAS DA], University of Scranton [$33k/yr, neuroscience], or Hunter College [no merit, for CS]

I have been accepted to three schools (really two, one was withdrawn) and I am torn between University at Buffalo and Scranton.
However, I’m leaning more towards UB because of the ABET accreditation, WiSE (Women in Science & Engineering) LLC, the idea of being in the Northeast (even though this is the same for Scranton), etc.

I’m waiting on two CUNY schools…still…Hunter & Baruch, applied to CS for both, not sure when they’re coming out!

Net price per year at each college, after applying scholarships and financial aid grants.

  • UB: $34,767/year
  • Scranton: $40,771/year

SAI: $126,597 (as calculated by my FAFSA)

Major/division admitted to at each college, if applicable to the college. Also, any special programs like honors programs or combined degree programs (e.g. BA/BS->MD).

  • UB: SEAS (School of Engineering & Applies Sciences) Direct Admit
  • Scranton: Neuroscience

If you applied to regular fall term start, specify if you were admitted to start at a different campus, in study abroad, in an online/distance or extension program, or other than in the fall term.

  • UB & Scranton: normal on-campus fall start

Desired major and post graduation goals (including if pre-med, pre-law, etc.).
Engineering, may want to get a master’s degree afterward.

International or domestic student (and state of residency if domestic).
Domestic, New York.

Student preferences beyond the above (including weather, class sizes, campus culture, college demographics, fraternities/sororities, distance from home, etc.).

  • weather is fine, just not overwhelmingly hot in summer.
  • class sizes: small. I have a learning disability and I just genuinely think small class sizes have helped me as a student in HS, would like to continue that in college.
  • demographics: relatively diverse or if a PWI, hopes to join clubs around my identity (eg: LGBTQ+, black/African student union, etc.)
  • fraternities/sororities: I don’t intend on “rushing” – too much drama/drinking/partying.
  • distance from home: northeast; UB is 90 mins away by plane, 7 by driving/Scranton is not worth the flight since it’s 2h30m by driving.
  • disability services/mental health: should be solid and actually effective, as I plan to use both constantly.
  • study abroad: PLEASE yes I want this so bad.
Preliminary assessment of each college based on the above.
Well, UB has a great ABET accredited program and I would pivot my major to be either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering eventually. They have a good LLC, close to home/in my home state, and they’re using experiential learning. Plus, i’m visiting soon because it’s a viable option.

Not really considering Scranton, I signed up for Niche DA in the beginning of the college process in case I needed more options but ended up not really considering it. Too religious (not that I’m against religion, but that’s the vibe I get.), Scranton isn’t ABET accredited in either of the Engineering paths I want to follow, which kind of just makes it a no for me.

I mean, for either school, I’d have to dorm/live on campus…which I wasn’t really expecting…

Other things I like: robotics (they better have a robotics club!), potentially may join a club T&F/XC team as I did it for some time in HS, volunteering, piano, different languages (<3), etc.

Why did you apply to each college you are considering?

  • UB: free SUNY application week, has a good engineering program, state flagship (also the reason why I didn’t think I was going to get in, so I’m shocked :D), they have a UB CSTEP (which is what I applied to at NYU and got rejected from :sob:), and lastly they have a currently inactive VEX U team but if I attended I would want to make it active again =)
  • Scranton: didn’t really apply, but it was a match from Niche Direct Admissions.

Please help!
(Even though I seem to have a preference that leans towards UB and not Scranton!)

You prefer Buffalo and you are in the engineering school. IMO that makes it an easy choice IF you can manage the distance from home. Bonus points for Buffalo being less expensive. See what happens with your other options.

There are 60-70 AAU schools in North America. Buffalo is one of them. These are the top research schools. If you’re in engineering, this means they have a lot more resources than Scranton. They do over $500m a year in research. I don’t know about the subspecialties there, and it could be the money is devoted to some and not the others. Hard to know. But overall, Buffalo is one of the top research schools in the country, and has better programs than places like Binghamton or a Syracuse or really any public university in NY and New England. When you look at research in the northeast at publics, it’s Buffalo, Pitt, Penn State, Rutgers. Those are the 4. Which is not to say you can’t have a great experience anywhere else. I know a recent grad of URI in engineering who had great success with jobs right our of school.

I’m a big fan of SUNY Buffalo.
I didn’t know anything about it before our daughter was accepted there with merit and full aid.
She was attracted to a program they used to have for premed.

She intended to attend med school through that program. One of her requirements, for premed coursework was biomed engineering and she discovered that she liked engineering more than medicine, so she took electrical engineering and did a double major in computer software.

It took her five years total after the change of major.
Did I mention she got into Yale and Johns Hopkins? She is our eldest daughter and she knew that we had to pay for our daughter and son’s colleges and decided to attend the full ride school because she knew that med school was going to be expensive, for at least two out of the three kids in our family.
There were only 4 females in the engineering program, at the time, in various levels of completion of units. Engineering is an extremely tough major, so attrition was high; she was a favorite of the professors and was incredibly intelligent-did proofs in her head.
We didn’t know a soul on the East Coast. Her flights on Southwest from San Diego were $100, one way, with advanced booking.

She has done extremely well in her occupation as an EECS specialist.
No question-UB! SUNY Buffalo is vastly underrated.

Honestly- if I have to do the seven hours twice a year, it would be manageable.

Yeah! It is like ~$6k less than Scranton after merit! :open_mouth:

Will do, anxiously awaiting their emails (because IIRC, they do not do the common Status Update email)!

Nice! I really wanna pursue research while in college, I should have put that above. Thank you for letting me know!

This is good, also, to know! More on research

I don’t want to quote your whole thing, but I really appreciate the story!! It’s great to hear it and that she’s been successful post-grad!

She’s happy because she received a great education there.
She came back to California, and a number of her employer interviewers were unfamiliar with the Buffalo program. They were familiar with UC and CSU programs but she created her own organization acronym system, for her own knowledge, as a new engineer -based on her lab experiences at Buffalo. She presented these and other ideas to her future employers.

At her first job, (By accident) a VP walked by her office and saw her org board. Her training in R&D at Buffalo helped her to generate efficient flow charts in development and testing. Her cost-effective changes went companywide.

I’m gonna update the thread title now!
I just randomly got an email from Hunter College at like ~3:30ish PM about my financial aid package and it was super out of the blue. I didn’t even know. Apparently, CUNYs don’t send emails, they just update your CUNYFirst portal and then you kinda just find out through the email on your FinAid package if you got in.

The image

BTW- I think I was admitted for CS…which was like my #1 major at the time of applying but it’s now maybe a #3/#4 option.

I’ll update the body of post #1 in a couple of minutes.
